multi user/ multi store / one checkout

I want to build an online art gallery for artists of the Big Island and...

 

I was wondering if it were possible to set up a website where each user could set up a separate "store" to sell things. It would be something similar to etsy.com. Has anyone done this? ...

so I can charge a commission.
