jdog Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 OK, I'm trying to get started on this, but my PHP/MySyql For Dummies book says I should put MySYQL and PHP on my computer so I can work on my stuff before I upload it. Makes sense to me. I turned on the PHP/MySyql capability today at my server; I suppose I did that a little early. No biggie, unless it's going to take me a month to prepare the database (which I hope it wont!). I went to the MySyql site to download MySyql (book says do that before I do PHP). Well, the site confused me. Basically it looks like MySyql is for sale. I thought that was only for commercial developers. I want the free program. I could get the 30 trial of MySYQL "Enterprise" edition, whatever that is, but I don't want programs that turn themselves off after a set time period. Will this enterprise edition do that? Thanks for your comments........ forgive my stupidity..............
lindsayanng Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 I have not done this.. I did a lot of my changes to my site BEFORE we went live, and then uploaded a different site which was the same as the other, used the same DB, but it wasnt accessable to teh customers.. i did changes on that, tested it, and then would move the changes to my live site. to get it working on your home cpu, you need an APACHE SERVER A great place for newbies to start Road Map to oscommerce File Structure DO NOT PM ME FOR HELP. jdog Posted October 7, 2008 Author Posted October 7, 2008 I thought the Apache Server was what I should get IF I'm going to host the site myself, from my own system (somebody told me that, at least that's what I understood it to mean). I'm setting up my site on a commercial server. I went back to the mySYL ssite, and I found a bunch of downloads..... I still don't know what to get, though...I think I can figure that out, now that I'm looking at this stuff, but now I'm wondering about this Apache server thing (I know it's free, too, but do I really need it?
lindsayanng Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 yes.. you still need apache to run those other things on your cpu.. READ THIS THREAD!! heres another tip.. if you are trying to do something, and you assume it has been done before, isntead of searching the forum using the forums builtin search.. go to google and type in: site:www.oscommerce.com/forums what you want to search this will search for those terms ONLY on this forum A great place for newbies to start Road Map to oscommerce File Structure DO NOT PM ME FOR HELP. sLaV- Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 The oscommerce package takes care of installing the database tables and setting it all up for you ... all you need is a server with PHP and MYSQL (which you said you just purchased) ... once you have purchased it you just need the MYSQL details (the address/login/database name - which you would receive from your host once purchased) - upload the oscommerce package via FTP to your server ... then follow the instructions (docs) that came with the installer to install oscommerce ...
Gauravs Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 Instead of downloading Apache and MySQL separately, suggest you to download XAMPP A ready made option for your machine which installs database (MySQL), PHP and Apache for you. Once Installed, all you need to do is to copy osc folder to htdocs folder and start the install process as you would do on an actual web host. Cheers Best Regards,Gaurav
lindsayanng Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 THATS what i was looking for XAMPP!! that is your KEY to doing this.. Ignore the comment above, those are the instructions for installing on a host's server.. you NEED to make your cpu into a personal server, for your own use..
