Guest Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 Why do spammers love the Tips and Tricks channel?? Thet are mentally challenged and think that everyone is as stupid as they are.
Jan Zonjee Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 Why do spammers love the Tips and Tricks channel?? They are probably instructed to do so or perhaps this is some kind of scripted thing? A large percentage of these spammers the past week are from Russia, Ukraine, and Moldavia by the way.

Would it be a good idea to put new users under probation, so initial posts have to be validated, or would that just create more hassle? Or are these accounts created legitimately then thrown into a pool for a script to pick from?
Guest Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 Would it be a good idea to put new users under probation, so initial posts have to be validated, or would that just create more hassle? That would take forever sorting through them with a forum this big.
germ Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 If the problems are caused by bots, requiring the new user to click a link in an email to actually activate their account before they post might stop that. I can't remember if that happens when you register here or not, nor would I know if that's even possible to implement here. If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you. I also am not sure if that feature is enabled as it has been a couple of years since I registered.
Jan Zonjee Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 Would it be a good idea to put new users under probation, so initial posts have to be validated, or would that just create more hassle? The average of new users per day last month was 100. The last couple of days it was 178 and 139... and some were not on the forum after that because they don't have a "last seen" entry. Makes me think this is scripted and/or a coordinated effort (some people creating accounts, others posting with the credentials). Nasty because in the end they are destroying productivity (at least mine :) ). So validating first posts is kind of unpractical at the moment with that number of new members (not all of them post though so why become a member?).

What about using a captcha to at least slow the bots. Sam Remember, What you think I ment may not be what I thought I ment when I said it. Guest Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 What about using a captcha to at least slow the bots. There is a CAPTCHA on the registration page. You might want to try and change the CAPTCHA code to add some lines or different font faces.
germ Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 They are probably instructed to do so or perhaps this is some kind of scripted thing? A large percentage of these spammers the past week are from Russia, Ukraine, and Moldavia by the way. I think the "scripted thing" (i.e. web robots) has to be the explanation. I've noticed when you ban someone, if you click on their name in the online list you just get sent to the main page instead of seeing the profile Yet, many you've banned keep coming back again and again. If it was "real people" they'd just create another account and SPAM again. Maybe a more complicated CAPTCHA code is in order. I did read somewhere that the software was around for bots to defeat at least some of that ( DOH! obviously... ). germ Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 You could get the IP address (I'm sure that's part of the info collected when registering it's just not displayed) and bitch to their ISP provider, but they don't HAVE to do anything about it. And if they've hijacked a computer somewhere and are going thru the hijacked PC to do the posting the IP address does little good (except maybe help identify a hijacked PC). It's not pretty no matter how you look at it. :( If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you. ♥Vger Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 On an IPB Forum I manage elsewhere we've got the Captcha same as here, but new users also have to validate by clicking a link in the signup email they receive. Until they do that they go into the "Validating Group". The list updates every 24 hours and any applicants that haven't responded by then have to apply again. This cuts out 90% of the spammers because they supply fake email addresses. With regards to the other 10% we also ban all mail addresses from specific countries, dodgy mail companies, and ip addresses (won't list them here) and that deals with most of the remainder. When someone supplies a fake email address I get notifications of all of the bounces, and there have been a lot during the past week. Normally there are hardly any - so it does seem to all be part of a concerted campaign by Porn Spammers. Even if they did register we don't allow the use of HTML code in postings, so the images and video links would not appear, except as text. Vger
sLaV- Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 hello ... and goodbye!! :D ... BTW nice work Jan keeping the forum spam free :D :D top job
germ Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 GOD knows we've seen more porn than at an adult film festival around here lately.... <_< And while I'm typing this I see a user with the nickname VIAGRA_Fast_Cheap registering... Looks like another "preemptive strike" is in order, Jan. ;) If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you.
