thelookingglass Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Hi, I want to create a link from my wholesale information page to an excel page which requires a password to read this excel page. My website is set up for normal retail customers, but I want to link up a pricelist page for wholesalers only to see. Is this pssible to do? any help much appreciated. Thanks
germ Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 You could put the excel sheet in a folder by itself protected by .htaccess (assuming you're on a UNIX server) and just give out the password to wholesalers. Then fix the link to it on your web page so that it only shows up when people are logged in. Since you're setup for "normal retail customers" it doesn't sound like you can differentiate between normal customers and wholesalers just by their login. If you installed a contrib like Separate Pricing Per Customer where it creates "classes" of customers, you could probably make the link show up to wholesalers only. You'd need to check the documentation for SPPC before installing, though. I've never used it and I'm only speculating on it's capabilities. If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you. Guest Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 If it were down to me, I'd go with Germs #1 solution of htaccess, as it'll be eleventy million times quicker. If it's only a speadsheet you want them to have, there's no real benefit to having OSC involved IMO
thelookingglass Posted October 6, 2008 Author Posted October 6, 2008 Hi, Been away so just got your reply. I will look into this. How would I protect the document? I did try to add the Special Pricing Per Customer addon, but I was getting a few error messages and very frustrated, so looking for an easier option. Thanks for your help

I have added an excel document in my httpdocs file . When I type in my website and then the file name a box pops up saying transferring file and then another box saying 'Enter Network Password' asking for username and password. I don't mind if this file is not password protected as the name will only be given to those who need it. So saying that, how can I get rid of the 'Enter Network Password' box, so it opens automatically? Thanks also for your help Sue
