I was wondering which is the best way to install the initial files. I have followed various tutorials that prompt you to upload the catalog folder. I have done this but have found that if you know the type in the domain name only, it will open up the index page, rather than the main website. So I am assuming it's better to extract the files from the catalog folder and upload them into your directory. Does this make sense?

When I installed Oscommerce I followed this guide: http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=162231

Basically:

1) download the file

2) extract the contents

3) upload the contents of the "catalog" folder (either the whole folder, or everything within it) to a folder on your web host (remember what folder) (extract all files to root directory if you want your cart to be the main page)

4) open web browser and go to http://www.yourdomain.com/ (if you chose to extract the contents of the catalog folder to root) or http://www.yourdomain.com/catalog if you uploaded the whole catalog folder to your root. or http://www.yourdomain.com/"other folder" where "other folder" is the folder you made (for example mine is http://www.yourdomain.com/shop

I hope that helps

I should also note that if you are trying to add oscommerce to an existing site you might want to upload the whole catalog folder, or do as I did and rename it "shop"

that way your existing site is still there, and then you can link to the shop by going to http://www.yourdomain.com/shop

once you have chosen the location, browse to "the location" /install

So mine would have been http://www.yourdomain.com/shop/install
