adding product weight

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Stupid question, I know, but when adding weights for products do I add in metric or imperial?

I have assummed all the time that it was metric and have added product weifghts in kilo but something odd is happening in store when I make a test purchase.

Please allow me to try and explain below.....

I am going into the products catalog and updating the weight of the product

field to say 1.40 kilograms and then saving the new listing.

Then i go onto the shop site and pretend to purchase that product.

When i get all the way through to the checkout and i am just about to

confirm payment for the product the shop site gives you a breakdown of your

order.

The product cost, The taxable element and the shipping weight and cost.

The product cost and the taxable element of the breakdown is fine and

calculates okay however the weight element and cost has me baffled.

With 1.40 kilograms loaded into the catalog product detail page i would

expect the weight on the checkout breakdown page to show 1.4 kilograms or

1.4 pounds or actually change/convert the 1.4 kilograms to pounds and

therefore show 3.1 pounds.

Yet the breakdown is showing 2.4 pounds at €8.50. Don't know where this

weight or cost is coming from. Shipping is based on zone rates.

In short i am not sure what to enter into the weight field in the products

catalogue details - kilograms or pounds - that will accurately be reflected

on the shop checkout breakdown page.

I am also not sure how to change the weights and charges due to postal

rates changing.

I would be very grateful for any help or advice received and thank you all in advance.

Look in admin and see what your tare weight is in shipping/packaging.

OSC does not convert weights, and does not care what units you use. You just need to be consisent throughout your shop and use either kg or lbs

Thanks Coopco.

The tare weight is set at 1. Dont really know what to set this at.

The shipping rates, set up for zones have decimal ponts (.5 and 2.5 etc. for weights) does this make a difference?

Does Oscommerce recognise decimal points in the table that is something like....

.5:2.20,2:7.50,2.5:8.70,3:9.80,3.5:11.00,4:12.00,4.5:13.00,5:14.00

or should I not use decimal points in the above and have something like....

1:2.20,2:7.50,3:9.80,4:12.00,5:14.00

I would be grateful for your advice on this and thank you again.

/includes/languages/english/shipping/usps.php refers to pounds, might need to be changed to refer to kg.

H Geofrey,

Thank you for your reply.

does the usps.php on the above stand for United States Parcel Post? if so then I don't think that this is the issue as I do not have this shipping. Only shipping configured is zone rates.

Correct it only is of interest is you are using that module.

Coopco pointed you in the right direction.

Did you notice 1.4 + 1 = 2.4?

A quick google for tare weight will explain what it is and then you can decide what value to set it to.

Hi Geofrey,

I didn't notice the calculation. Thank you as that makes complete sense.

To allow for theshipping to be calculated exacttly as I laid out then would it be best to set the tare weight to 0?

and the shipping rates with the decimal points are ok to use?

Thanks.

Tare weight should be used to add the cost of the packing to the products weight. Perfect if you only use one type and size of packaging, otherwise, some sort of average could be used.

Decimals are ok.

As geoffreywalton pointed out, the kg or lbs symbol is only a text value, and is only in some shipping modules. I believe that this changes in the next version of OSC.

For check out try something along the lines of in you language file for checkout shipping.

define('TEXT_CHOOSE_SHIPPING_METHOD', 'Please select a Delivery method to use for this order ('. $shipping_weight.' ' .MODULE_SHIPPING_ZONES_TEXT_UNITS .'). Whilst we make every effort to calculate the shipping charges correctly, with larger orders this may not always be possible, we will contact you should the price differ to the screen.</b>');

You will probably need to edit this to work for your site.

Hrm.. this is what I edited it to be... but there doesn't seem to be any change at all..

define('TEXT_CHOOSE_SHIPPING_METHOD', 'Please select the preferred shipping method to use on this order ('. $shipping_weight.' ' .MODULE_SHIPPING_ZONES_TEXT_UNITS .'). Whilst we make every effort to calculate the shipping charges correctly, with larger orders this may not always be possible, we will contact you should the price differ to the screen.');

Did I do something incorrectly?

Did this replace another define('TEXT_CHOOSE_SHIPPING_METHOD'?

Did you save it and upload it to your site?

This was my original define:

define('TEXT_CHOOSE_SHIPPING_METHOD', 'Please select the preferred shipping method to use on this order' );

I just added what you posted up:

define('TEXT_CHOOSE_SHIPPING_METHOD', 'Please select the preferred shipping method to use on this order ('. $shipping_weight.' ' .MODULE_SHIPPING_ZONES_TEXT_UNITS .'). Whilst we make every effort to calculate the shipping charges correctly, with larger orders this may not always be possible, we will contact you should the price differ to the screen.');

And yup, I saved it and uploaded it to try..

Will do Geofrey and I will post the results here as it might help others in the future...

Thank you.

I just have an update on weight calculations and also have two questions on it of which I would be grateful for you guys to answer and thank you again in advance.

I added, in the online oscommerce shop and noted, the product weight as 1.40 Kilograms.

Then i went onto the shop site and ordered this product and processed the

order all the way through to payment step.

Here i could see the whole order and breakdown.

Weight was showing as 1.54 lbs at a cost of €7.50.

Zone 1 Countries

IE,IRE

Zone 1 Shipping Table

.5:2.20,2:7.50,2.5:8.70,3:9.80,3.5:11.00,4:12.00,4.5:13.00,5:14.00

In line with the shipping zone rates set-ip above this looks good/correct

eg:- as above 1.54 is below 2 so 7.50 euros should be charged.

What i could not work out is with a Tare weight of just 0.1 how did the

weight come out as 1.54.

Surely 1.40 plus 0.1 should be just 1.50.

So i went back into the administration area again and changed the

following:-

In the configuration drop down menu under "shipping/packaging" there is a

section called "Larger Packages - percentage increase".

This was at 10% and i changed it to 0%.

This actually changed the weight on the shop site breakdown to 1.5 which is

what it should be. Weight of product - 1.4 plus Tare weight - 0.1.

Now my question is - is it alright to leave this at 0% and what impact, if

any, will it have if we do leave it at 0%.?

Last question is it possible to change the reading on the final order

breakdown to read KG versus LBS.?

Thank You.
