Getting SSL?

Hi there,

I'm hosting my site with mediatemple (gs) service.

They offer SSL throught GeoTrust in pretty comf prices, $50 setup and $10/M

I'm very new to SSL and was wondering if I better get the certificate from 3rd party and deal with the hassle, I know i can use 3rd party certificate with them, or do I better get it from them.

Reason asked is because I usually try not to get too attached to a provider. I'm paying on a month to month basis and *just in case* I won't be happy with the host we'll find someone else.

Is this something like domain names that I better keep it close to me and manage myself, in case I move host I just need to update the certificate, or will I anyway need to get a new certtificate issued if I transfer host?

hope I make sense.

The $50 is not unreasonable if they are going to bother purchasing it for you. You can get one for about $15 if you do it yourself, although that can be a pain if you have not done it before. The $10/month for the IP is quite high though. That cost is usually around $1 to $5.

Be sure to keep a copy of your key, csr and crt files. If you change hosts, those will be needed to move the cert.

Thanks for your fast reply Jack.

I can get GeoTrust SSL for $15? anywhere I looked is way higher than that, would be nice to get a link if you have any. and I don't mind the pain, think I might even like to do it myself just to know how it works better.

I didnt understand that the $10/m goes for the unique IP. now it make more sense to me. So anyway, even if i move I'll still have the cert and would just need to pay the new host for the unique IP correct?

When I quoted the $15, I was referring to certs in general. Don't get caught up in the hypr that one cert is better than another. There is some truth to that but the end result to you and, especially, your customers is negligible. Take a look at namecheap.com and godaddy.com (both long-time respected companies) to see what they offer. Godaddy has their certs on sale for $15 but you have to seach for the link.

Yes, if you move hosts and have those files, the cert can be re-installed.
