Show Available Quantity

I am having some difficulty locating a thread that describes how to add a box showing "Quantity Available" for each product I have listed so my customers can see the available quantity before adding selections to their cart.

 

I also need to prevent orders from being placed for quantities greater than what is in stock. I figured out how to add the 'warning' message indicating to customers that the item is out of stock but have yet to come across a thread that will actually prevent them from purchasing items in excess of the available quantity.

 

I've spent several hours looking through forums and posts and figured someone here probably knows right where these solutions are - if so, please direct me!

Thanks for responding - that's probably the problem because I'm not sure what file you're talking about so I don't think I've done that. Can you be more specific about what file I need to check to edit the configuration to read 'false'. Also - any ideas about the first question with the quantity available feature? Its in your admin control panel. configuration > stock > allow checkout

How embarrassingly simple - I guess I should always double check that my solution isn't something in the basic admin tools before asking for help! Thanks again!
