wycodeiwyg Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 I am new to osCommerce. I am taking over a site that was already installed, and the installation was by the web hosting company. This question is about the different releases of Version 2.2 In comparing releases, by looking at the code, I verified that we have a version of osCommerce that is referred to as Version 2.2 MS2, or Milestone 2, with the latest updates effective August 17 2006. I compared this to what is currently on the osCommerce home page and I learned that there are actually (at least) 5 different versions of osCommerce 2.2. What is of concern to me is that there are three releases after the one we have and my hosting company does not have it, despite saying they carry osCommerce and will install free for you, along with php and mysql. For those of you who have hosting companies that offer osCommerce installs free, do you know if they will give you what the current osCommerce homepage download is?... which is Version 2.2RC2a....three releases after the one my hosting will give me and they are stating that this is the most up-to-date. Any info will help me get a better picture. I sincerely appreciate your time!!! (p.s., I am aware that I can download myself and install myself, but for reasons specific to this job and this website, I am trying to understand what options this web hosting company is giving me compared to others.) I also wanted them to do it, versus me, if it was in fact part of our subscription anyway -- being new to loading php and mysql too, I
♥Vger Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 Perhaps it is because of the way the new releases were named as "RC" versions. In coding "RC" stands for "Release Candidate" or Beta versions. When phpBB was updated it went through at least 6 (and possibly more) RC versions before they released it as phpBB 3, replacing phpBB 2. Many hosts provide installs of osCommerce via auto-loader scripts such as Fantastico or Power Tools, and I doubt that the companies that provide those scripts are going to provide an "RC" version for their customers. They would be in the position of having to continually upgrade to the latest RC version and could even be accused by their customers of providing Beta versions which are not fit for use on production websites. There are manual upgrade files provided with the RC versions which allow you to upgrade osCommerce 2.2 MS2 (060817) to the latest versions, but please be careful if you have added contributions to the basic install.
