1267 - Illegal mix of collations

I am trying to move my store from one server to another.

 

This is the error I get

 

1267 - Illegal mix of collations (latin1_swedish_ci,IMPLICIT) and (utf8_general_ci,COERCIBLE) etc..

a few points:

The old server where there was no error

MYSQL: 4.1.22-standard

 

The new server with the error

MYSQL: 4.1.21 with JP patch

 

I did see a similar error discussed on the mysql site around mysql 4.1.11 so not sure if it is related.

 

I switched over a few tables to utf8 and was able to get rid of the first error message, but I would have to change every entry in every table if I went this route.

 

Also, the store is in Japanese so I am not even sure if I can use UTF8 as I don't have a frim grasp of character encoding.

 

Any thoughts?
