Yes MS2 is older than RC2 ... i'm also using MS2 and found that all addons we tried can be used for MS2 also ... what addons you trying to install??

Upgrading from 2.2ms2(060817) to RC1 --> Here RC1

I'm afraid you've got that the wrong way round. Most contributions are for osCommerce 2.2 MS2, and many have not been updated to work on the RC versions of osCommerce.
