Guest Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 didnt know i couldnt ask this question. delete post if not allowed.
Jack_mcs Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 link2me.com / index.cgi?menu=featured didnt know if this would have ill affects on my site or a good idea? Link Exchanges can help a site but you have to be careful with the sites you use to do that. If they add links to quickly, it can get you banned by the search engines. Plus, those types of sites usually need to have their code installed in yur shop and that code may not work well with oscommerce. There is a Links Manager contribution (see my contributions) that will allow links to be handled in an oscommerce friendly way. You do have to work at adding links but there are free sites around that will help with that. Also see the link in my signature regarding link exchanges. Guest Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 i just made a new page called links and i put them all in there? is this a correct way of doing it?
Jack_mcs Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 Yes, that will work. It will become difficult to maintain over time, assuming you will add more links, which you have to do if you want them to work, but if that doesn't bother you, it's fine. There is the problem of other sites dropping their links though. Unscrupulous shops masters will setup link exchanges and then, after some time, remove the one on their site. This has the effect of providing them with a one-way link, which is much more preferable to a two-way link, which is what you are doing. If you don't check the links every-so-often, you will never know this has happened. As you add more and more links, checking them becomes a full-time job but one that is necessary to remove such links, as well as dead ones (the other site goes away). That's why the Links Manager contribution is a better approach. It's OK but probably not very useful. The keywords need to be relevant to the item the page is about. While there may be a general relevancy, I doubt that one set of keywords will fit all of the products and categories in a shop. Guest Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 i sell decals so my keywords are basicly decal, sticker, window decal, car decal, windshield decal - ect.. you dont get penalized for too many keywords do you? what i did was look at the 1 ranked decal site and checked there keywords and did it similar to theirs?
Guest Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 one more thing...sorry for being a pain but there is so much to learn - lol does putting a link to my website in my sig on forums help or not worth it? and i have your contrib downloaded and will install tonight. looks like you have well explained instructions so i should be ok - crossed fingers ;)
Jack_mcs Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 you dont get penalized for too many keywords do you? No, but too many can dilute the meaning of the page and cause the ranking to go down. It depends on the text on the page and how the keywords are used in it. does putting a link to my website in my sig on forums help or not worth it?Any link to your site will generally help. The more relevant a link is to the page it is linking to, the more benifit it is. But you need to be aware of forum rules. Some forum sites don't care, but putting a link to your site in your signature on this site is against the rules.
