Installation of new template

Hiya,

 

My apologies as i am sure that this topic has been mentioned several times but not on the level i would understand. I managed to get the online store up and running. Now it comes with just basic template and want to change this to a more appealing view.

 

Now the problem i am having is that i download the free template and try to understand the document to install this but cant understand if this is for a fresh install deleting everything from my existing little changes or how to just upgrade/change the template. I have been roaming round all the subjects in the forums but have not found and easy method of understanding how to do this. As i am a complete beginner and trying to learn from the basics upwards i am having so much trouble of adding extra pictures in the item description or just changing the template. Am sure this must be a simple learning curve but dont want to run the risk of trying something and realising ive messed my whole store up. Any help please would be appreciated
