category layout

Hi, some of my lower level categories dont have images and never will have so rather than display them in columns as normal is there an easy way to show them in a list like the products are.........but only when there is no category image.

 

The reason i want to do this is because some of my category names are quite long so they're getting squashed into the columns.

 

Any help would be good.
