Start small and do it in baby steps. To move the search box you open either catalog/includes/column_left.php or catalog/includes/column_right.php. In column_left.php you will see

<?php
/*

*/

 if ((USE_CACHE == 'true') && empty($SID)) {
echo tep_cache_categories_box();
 } else {
include(DIR_WS_BOXES . 'categories.php');
 }

 if ((USE_CACHE == 'true') && empty($SID)) {
echo tep_cache_manufacturers_box();
 } else {
include(DIR_WS_BOXES . 'manufacturers.php');
 }

 require(DIR_WS_BOXES . 'whats_new.php');
 require(DIR_WS_BOXES . 'search.php');
 require(DIR_WS_BOXES . 'information.php');
?>

This is the line that tells you where the search box is

  require(DIR_WS_BOXES . 'search.php');

You can move that up or down or even to the other column. When doing so just keep in mind that the categories box is this whole section

  if ((USE_CACHE == 'true') && empty($SID)) {
echo tep_cache_categories_box();
 } else {
include(DIR_WS_BOXES . 'categories.php');
 }

So you would have to move it to either above that section or below it, but not in the middle.

On another note - when I first started I messed up a few thousand times before I got the hang of it. One thing that saved a HUGE amount of time is just working on my local computer (such as my desktop). Download a program such as XAMPP or EasyPHP and install that. It will create a server on your computer. Then you can install osC and work from there. But keep backup copies on your desktop so WHEN you mess up you can just drag and drop from your desktop into your server files on your computer and keep going. It saves the time of FTP'ing everything to and from your computer to your real server all the time.
