Changing currency on my site

I have created a new currency GBP £ and have set it as my defualt currency. I wish to erase USD $ but when i do so, all my prices dissapear. So i then left usd $ in place and set GBP £ as my defualt currency but when i go to my catalogue USD $ is still the default currency. How do i change it please?

Oh. I have to add our national currency. What I do?

This is in /includes/languages/english.php
