osCommerce integration with InVision Forum

Guest

Recommended Posts

Hi all...

I am interested in feedback on integrating osCommerce with the InvisionBoard Forum (http://www.invisionboard.com). I read that a few people have done successful integrations.

Would they require seperate databases, or COULD they co-exist within the same database? What about User Account Registration and login? Would they be required to login twice, or could that be integrated also?

I have seen the PHP BB contribution, but not one for Invision. Could somebody be working on one? Hmmmm...

Any information is appreciated!

Actually, all the phpBB integration does is set up iframes, so that the OSC header, colums, and footer are displayed around the forum. You could easily change what forum is displayed in the center.

There has not been a integration with the username and password, or shared DB. However, I am slowly making some progress in this direction.

However, I believe that integration with phpBB is legally possible because it is released under the GNU license. What license is INvision released under?

NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit.

If you have a question about any of my posts here, your best bet is to contact me though either Email or PM in my profile, and I'll be happy to help.

I'll let those that know more about the subject give you a more of an idea about the legality of this, however I am certain that most, if not all, open source programmers are not going to work to integrate a non open source application into another one that is (for free, anyway).

I think that there are a few working on integrating phpBB, including myself, and I think that this is a good pairing.

If you want to integrate this application into you OSC shop, I would advise hiring a developer.

Thanks for the update.

It's not that I couldn't (or wouldn't) do this myself, I kinda wanted to find out the experiences of others with the Invision product and osC.

I agree, PHP BB is a fine product and if I had my choice, I would use it. But, for some reason, my client is bent on using Invision.

I would definitely be interested in the legalities of the integration.

I look forward to hearing more.

  • 2 months later...

I have invisionboard on my site.

Its on its own database, basically when a user signs upto the main site, they are given a box on the form "forum name" when they submit the information it is fed into the OS database and the Invision one too.

There is a link which opens a new window which includes the terms and conditions of the site and also includes the T+C of the forum, users have to tick a "read and agree" box.

Doesnt work the other way round though.

I didnt do the work, so I cant tell how its put together, however I am looking at updating my site and will need someone to integrate the forum again so will hopefully get them to post it as a contribution.

I might be interested on something like this too but haven't looked into doing it...

I'd use phpBB, but would much much much much rather use Invision board.... it is so much less stressfuly and less intensive on the server than phpBB is. consequently, it is a much faster and "smoother" forum than phpBB.

I don't suspect it would be hard... when a user creates an account, give the option to sign up for the forums too, and connect to both databases and write the proper info to both databases... then maybe add a column to the customer's OSC table... something like "forum_user"... and when they sign in, if the value is true, log them into the forum as well. of coarse that is over simplified, but the direction I would go in if I decide to try to integrate Invisionboard with OSC.

another option might be to inlcude a checkbox "I want to sign up on the forums" in the create account page, and then when hit continue have it open (maybe in a new window, cause likely they'll be checking out) the forum signup page... and feed the info to the page, so that all they'd have to fill in was maybe username.
