I have a solution that's a bit messy to implement but it works. Send me a private message and I'll email you the file.

Hi There,

I just launched my site here in New York and have the same question. Did you find out if county specific tax rates can be entered?

create tax class.

Associate it with a product.

Also associate it with zone.

I know there is a solution (since I'm looking for it again). I can't remember the contribution, but a while ago I put together a store with sales tax for each city in California, based on the customer's zip code. Check the contribs. If I find out which one I'll let you know.

How to Setup Your Taxes

In admin, under Locations/Taxes, click on "Tax Zones"

Click on the "new zone" button. In the Zone Name: input field I enter "CA"

For Description I enter "California". Click on "insert"

After you click insert, you will see CA show up in the list. You think you're done, but not

quite!

Click on the "CA" (or whatever name you have!) in the list and you will see the heading

say "Geographical Zones / CA"

Here you see a "new zone" button again. Click on it!

Now you get to select a geographical zone. From Country, I Select United States

From Region, Select California. Click "update"

A few more steps to go! Now under "Locations/Taxes" click on "Tax Rates"

Click on "new tax rate" button

Select "Taxable Goods" from the Tax Class Title drop down menu

From the Zone menu, select CA (or whatever zone you created)

In the Tax Rate field enter the tax percentage

In the Description, enter the description, e.g. "California Sales Tax"

Now you're done!

thanks satish. actually i had everything right but in tax zones i had called new york, new york instead of ny and this is why it was detecting the state specific taxes.

this is a good start but a pain since you have to do it for every product and taxes within the state vary quite a bit but i guess something is better than nothing.

the ideal is a contribution which calculates taxes according to the county or zipcode where the product is actually being shipped because within NY there are different tax zones.

taxes are not different because of the products or different product classes but based on where in New York state they are ordered from. for example 10 different counties in ny state might have different state tax rates.

different zones are needed for regions that have differnt tax rates. So create more zones and then associate tax.

thats not possible because zones are created by name or initial of state for example. if you enter ny it will take what you entered in ny. the unique identifier by which it determines the tax rate by state initials. i know that because before i entered new york instead of ny as the description and name of zone and it did not work. i hope you understand what i am saying.

anyways for now i am just going to use the same tax rate for NY.

you can add new zones but you can distinguish them based on a users address within the state.
