Froogle DataFeed File Direct From OsCommerce...

Guest

Recommended Posts

There has been a great increase in the requests for a way to generate a datafeed file for Froogle directly from within OSCommerce. Due to the nature of the Open Source Community, it could take months of waiting for someone to have the time to create a method. We all have to take time out from our Open Source World to eat and earn money you know...

So, as a benefit to the OsCommerce community, Wasson65 has graciously taken on the "task" of modifing the EasyPopulate Contribution to offer that feature. I have seen the "Beta" files that the script produces, and it is promising! Please thank Wasson65 for all the hard work!

What is Froggle? It sounds like something I want to know about :?:

Never mind! I looked farther down the page and saw the thread. Great work! I am using Easy Populate right now to create my catalog, so using an update for Froogle should be a piece of cake :D

How DID they come up with that name?????

Ability is what you're capable of doing...

Motivation determines what you do...

Attitude determines how well you do it.

Nice CC, very nice.

Well, I have had the Froogle Update for Beta Testing, and It works great! When it is released to the Contributions, I will suggest reading the Documentation, as there are a couple (easy) default variables that need to be filled in before use. Trust me, as I did not read the docs, and gave myself a headace, and had to wipe egg off my face...

Any way, should be on it's way soon!

Close but there are some problems.

It doesn't output the correct category structure for starters. Just grabs the top category - no subcategories as required by Froogle.

Won't work with Search Engine Friendly URLs enabled (which I have). Should be easy enough to search and replace the file to fix that though.

Has some fields that get spit out blank therefore causing 2 tabs between which will cause Froogle to reject that product (effectively meaning that Froogle with reject the entire feed). :( (the expiration and delete fields are the problem ones. they really don't serve a purpose here and cause the double tabs. Have to look closer to see if there are others).

It would also be a bonus if it stripped any HTML out of the description field as Froogle won't accept it.

Heck of a nice first try though. :D

Note to self: put Ron on beta list from now on!

Not 15 minutes and my bubble has been burst...

I'll take these and come up with some answers.

LOL...sorry. I've just been holding  my breath waiting for this so I grabbed it the second it came available.  :D

I'll crawl back under my rock now.

OK, I've got a beta with fixes for the following:

1. Category path not being built properly.

2. HTML tags stripped from name/descriptions

3. Should work with magic quotes.

The last item, about blank things causing froogle to reject, I need some help proving this out, because the pdf from google says that you can leave fields blank, but must include the tab delimiter for that field.

I've got a beta of 2.41 available here:

www.wassons.org/EasyPopulate_v2.41beta.zip

Can you try this out and let me know?

Thanks,

Tim

Thoughts in random order....

Category looks fine now (although it shows it as Category>Subcategory yet the docs call for Category > Subcategory - notice the spaces. Not sure if this makes a diff. Probably not.)

Works with SE friendly URLs now. Is it necessary to add the language param at the end of the URL though? Only reason I ask is that I only use English anyway and it doesn't serve a purpose for me. Maybe it does for those that use multiple languages?

Is there really a need for the shipping parameter at all? Nobody's going to have it anyway. Just thought it might cut the overhead a bit without it. No big deal either way.

Same goes for upc, color, size, manufacturer_id, exp_date and delete. Maybe these are meant if a particular contribution is installed though. I didn't look closely at the code to see where they're coming from. Just checked the docs...hard to tell whether you can just pick and choose the optional fields based on the docs though. Might be best to just leave them in unless Google says otherwise. :?

Looks like it's adding a TAB after the last field (currency). Based on the docs that will get it bumped.

product_type calls for other - you've used OTHER. Not sure if that matters.

Looks like we have a winner once any of those tweaks that are really necessary are done. 8)

Another random thought based on this from the docs:

If your web pages allow users to select different feature options for the same product, please make sure that those options are reflected in the description. For example: ?Colors: blue, red, black. Sizes: small, medium, large.?

I don't use any attributes so I personally don't care but this might be a cool addition for those that do.

How hard would it be to determine if a product had attributes and if it did add them to the end of the description? :?

Does this link work for you guys?

Cos it aint working for me...

It is just dead.

Not site either if I drop back to index.

CC.

Sorry for the busted site.... It's just an old p2-300 sitting behind a p120 floppy-disk based firewall, on a 128k dsl line.

And the stupid firewall has developed a nasty habit of just hanging every few days.... grrrr.. Dang hardware was obsolete when I bought it 3 years ago.. It seems to be up and running now, for what that's worth.

If you can't get thru, just PM me your email, and I'll send it to you.

Tim
