Selling digital files...

Hi - I'm looking to see if anyone can offer some suggestions on what might be the best solution for selling digital files (PDFs). I'm working on a simple site for a client who wants to offer a package of information in the form of a single PDF, with the option of expanding the "products" to include more digital files and possibly even physical materials. But for now, I'm mainly concerned with addressing the more immediate needs. I haven't done much research yet, but know a friend who is using osCommerce for an online store of his and recommended it. Aside from this, I was thinking about going the PayPal route. Since the plan (right now) is to only offer one product, I don't think that a fancy storefront is that important (I can make one in html). The main challenge is to find something that can be stripped bare (read: not look like an empty store), but that can offer lots of control. My client wants the PDF to automatically be released to international buyers upon receipt of payment. I'm a print-based designer, so have little in the way of development skills. Any ideas about what would 1) work the best, and 2) be the easiest for me to set up? Toss me some thoughts - I appreciate your feedback.

Thanks,

Cory

I don't see why you couldn't design your site in html, etc and then link statically to a stripped down internal oscommerce product_info page.

I did a site selling digital downloads - sheetmusic4strings with not much of a problem. I don't recall the particulars, but using regular paypal with an oscommerce shop can allow users to download products w/out paying, if they are at all savvy. The above shop uses paypal express - I think that module skips some of the checkout pages, making it a liltte harder for the average joe to steal files.

that is ENTIRELY possible. I have been working on a photography website for my husband and you will not be selling one product, your store will have to have on product for every image and different size attributes if you are doing printing and such.

A great place for newbies to start

Hi Linda. I was wondering just exactly how your sheet music site managed the actual purchase to download process? Did you have to munge on the database tables to store a reference to the actual downloadable image, and how did you "lock the image up" until it was paid for...that sort of thing. I see the configuration in oscommerce allows to turn on downloads, but there does not appear to be a way to link to the actual download image in the product pages and it isn't at all clear how the buyer gets permissions to download, how the time period is enforced, etc.

I am extremely anxious to add a product for digital download (also a PDF as the person was asking about at the top of this thread).

Thanks

Michael

This option is built into oscommerce already. Look in your admin->Configuration->Downloads. You set it up using product attributes.

Yea. After that, set up the "pending downloads" contribution. This makes it so that the status has to be on delivered for someone to download the item. Then you add the "paypal IPN", this will automate the whole process. These are all contributions that you can search for in contributions section.

Thats what i use on my store.
