Using osCommerce for donations

hi guys, new to osCommerce and the forums.

I'm working with a non-profit travelling overseas for aid work in the coming months, and in order to accept donations from supporters, we decided to set up a "gift registry" of sorts. As osCommerce came with free with our webhosting, I thought I'd give it a try.

I'm hoping to list products such as 'feeding a family for a day', 'medical coverage for a month', or even just simple things like toothpaste or basketballs. None of these products are actually going to be purchased while we're still at home, but it will allow people to see how far a certain monetary donation can go when we travel with their money overseas.

Is it possible to remove the shipping and tracking portions of the checkout process? Ideally, people would add things to their cart, give some payment information, and receive a nice thank you for their donation, never to be worried about again. I know about removing payment and shipping 'modules' using the admin control panel, but giving the store a test run still prompts for these questions.

I'm guessing there won't be a simple answer to this question, but thanks for any advice or direction on where to proceed next!

a note on my computer experience: I (laughably <_< ) consider myself computer literate, but have zero skills in coding. I'm getting by so far on high school html. If this course fails, I can hit up friends with more relevant knowledge, but I'm hoping there's something I can do for myself first.

Thanks in advance!

Why not just set the "product" as a download. It can be a nice .pdf thank you, or some sort of image...any number of things and it is "delivered" via the website after payment is made.

osCommerce has a "download" option for selling software, easy to setup. Sounds like it might be what you wanted.

i've set downloads to 'true' using the admin control panel, and set up a test-product (pdf file) with the product attributes to give a download location. however, upon going into the store, i get a warning that:

"The downloadable products directory does not exist: /mnt/w0611/d27/s02/b02dd4f3/www/shopping/catalogdownload/. Downloadable products will not work until this directory is valid."

poking around with an ftp client shows that, while the above message is correct, there IS a shopping/catalog/download folder. i suspect if i could find where this error is occuring and insert a missing backslash, the problem might be fixed...

any suggestions on how to proceed next?
