Guest Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 I am looking at setting up a new ecommerce site within my company, now I have been doing some research and i am liking Oscommerce only I have a couple of questions that hopefully you wonderful people can answer. 1.. If I buy a template and install it, what happens when it comes to oscommerce updates? Do I lose the template or is it a case of simply uploading new files etc? 2.. How stable is a RC version and is worth buying these templates at the moment or should I wait until a final version is released? 3.. How easy is it to use and if i am running a large ecommerce site with SSL, taking Credit Cards through Paypal Pro, how easy is it do this? hope you guys can help with this. I have yet to tackle a decent cart system and need to make sure I am doing it the correct way. thanks in advance Gary

Guest Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 The thing is that OScommerce without a template has to be one of the ugliest carts around, and as there are so many oscommerce sites out there, we have to stand out, so templates are pretty important to give the company a little more identity. OS has all the functionality but it has to look good, just I dont want to spend a fortune on a template and then 2 months down the line find out that its redundant because os has a released a new release.
usernamenone Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Here is the deal with templates. People that have verry little knowledge about html and php codeing buy a template and most likley from Template Monster....... Well Template Monster uses out of date and not current osc code....... You will have to do updates on file that have been hacked in to by a company that does not care about the security of your site. But hey they look great. You will find that any updating and add ons or contributions will be painful and time consuming and if you have some knowledge about html and php you will make it through. If you do not and you decide to buy a template from them and any of us that have seen some of their templates can spot the sloppy coding of their a mile away.... you will know html and php when you are through. Good luck and just remember that the Osc forum is for the stock design and not templates. Help will be hard to come by. Hey, I have a great idea. Why doesn't Template Monster have a support forum of their own?

As usernameone said, the template designers usually use old versions of osc. So, if you install one, it will be out of date when installed. Oh, I don't think that my site looks ugly.
