Guest Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Hello! I received an email today from someone claiming to be a freelance web developer specialising in osCommerce. He mentioned various things that he could do and in particular said It is even possible for you to have a system which will grab all of the product info and pictures from your suppliers web site and automatically insert it into your site. Is this true?

Is this true? I had received a similar email awhile back. Automatically grabbing info and pics from another site, even if it's your supplier, is a NO-NO. It is called hotlinking and will raise your suppliers bandwidth use. Once they find out you will be cut-off and probably lose them as a supplier. It is best to ask your supplier if you can "copy" the information to post on your site, most will oblige. - :: Jim :: - - My Toolbox ~ Adobe Web Bundle, XAMPP & WinMerge | Install ~ osC v2.3.3.4 -
♥geoffreywalton Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Or they may be able to send you a data feed containing their product info at regular intervals. They may also call it a product catalogue. Good suppliers will also be able to send you images to use or provide a way for you download it. You will need one of the contributions to load product data onto your site from a csv file or Easy Populate Need help installing add ons/contributions, cleaning a hacked site or a bespoke development, check my profile Virus Threat Scanner My Contributions Basic install answers. germ Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Even if you could "hotlink" to their data (with their permission) it's probably not a good idea. If you do that, and their server goes down, or they alter their directory structure/file names, you're hosed! Best to have your own images & whatever so you can keep a handle on things. If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you. Guest Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 Thanks for the advice guys. I've got the Easy Populate contribution anyway. Is this probably the easiest and quickest way for uploading products? Cheers, Mark.
germ Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 For adding products en masse, I'd say so. Provided you can get the data in the proper format.
