can we keep product images in separate folder?

I am newbie, just started fill store with products, have a lot of work to do ahead, but I'd like to discuss something that bothering me.

I noticed that product images osCommerce 212 RC2a (probably all versions, I'm just guessing) stores in the images folder. The same folder also has some store images nothing to do with products. It creates difficulties of managing. I'm just wondering why product images can't be kept in separate folder, (manufacturers have it separate). Probably I missed something in settings or else. If this is a case please correct me. I hope that version 3 will have it separate.

Also, it would be helpful if images been deleted automatically when product is deleted from the database (probably there is the contribution for this one).
