Cross sell problem

When I try to cross sell items only the child items come up, not the parent item. When I cross sell the child item it does NOT show up when I look at the family or the item individually in the actual store. Whats up?

 

Also - in the cross sell screen at the bottom it says (in this example from my personal experience) 'Displaying 71 to 80 (of 440 customers)' when it should be 440 products.
