if you need a safe and secure SSL PM me I can sort you out with one

the only free SSL are 30day then you pay or a self-singing certificate but self-singing certificate is not good for live sites only for test sites

Yes I am looking for a free SSL. If there are no free ones out there, I need suggestions on cheap reliable ones.

The majority of hosts offer free, shared ssl's.

Why are SSL's sold if there are free shared SSL's? I am new to this so please have patience with me.

I want to use PayPal for payments and that's why I am sking about SSLs.

Free certificates come only for 30 day validity - more like an option to ensure that you have SSL while testing and developing your site.

To go for a good SSL certificate the pricing start from $29.99 onwards.

Thanks,

Gary

A shared ssl is installed on the server your site is on and can only have one name, usually that of the server. So the main disadvanaage of using a shared ssl is that your domain name would change from, for example, http://www.mydomain.com to https://server1.shared.com/~mydomain/. For a private ssl, the url would be https://www.mydomain.com. The advanatage is that it is free. Some shop owners don't like having their url changed like that and think it is unprofessional. But many don't mind it and run like that quite often. You might to try the shared ssl first and see if it is for you. You can always purchase a private one later.

One more question. Do I need SSL if I use PayPal?

Yes. Paypal has their own ssl so your customers order information is protected. But that won't extned to your customers personal information. People will notice this and leave your site. The $50, or so, that the ssl costs for a year would probably be recovered by not having lost sales due to not having a cert.

Looks like I have to buy SSL, so I need some advice. Which is a better one?

It's not a matter of which is better. An ssl cert is more for your customers reassurance as anything. Some of the more expensive ones will provide better graphics and look up options but, again, that is mainly just for show. You shouldn't pay more than $30 for a cert, unless it is through your host and they handle it for you. But even then, $60 would be too much. You also have to figure in the cost of the dedicate IP the private cert will need. The price for that ranges from $1 to $10 per month. You don't get anything for the extra cost - it is just what a host decides to charge. Go to godaddy or namecheap and look at their certs. That is all you need. If you spend more for it, you are wasting your money.
