New install - 2 problems (so far)

I don't seem to be able to chmod the /catalog/includes/configure.php down to 444, the install is on a shared server and the default is 644, I get the warning at the top of the catalog is it ok to leave it at 644 and disable the error as it says further down the page?

 

All the images including button graphics are corrupted, they are either horribly squished or corrupt - the only exceptions are the uk, german and spanish flag and images i upload....i downloaded this version oscommerce-2.2rc2a.zip

I have the same problem with new images I have been uploading. As for the permissions (chmod) 644 is okay because I believe its "read only"
