buttons not appearing

I've searched the forums thoroughly and have read every post regarding people having this same problem. I found many "solutions" but none of them worked. The most aggravating part of this problem is when this site was originally installed, the images did appear correctly. They just stopped appearing about 9 months ago (about the time PHP & MySQL were upgraded by the shared server admins).

 

shared server running:

Apache version 1.3.41 (Unix)

PHP version 5.2.5

MySQL version 5.0.45-community

 

http://www.domain.com/includes/languages/e...ton_buy_now.gif is not appearing in the shopping cart

(just as an example - ALL buttons do not appear). All buttons do appear in the /admin interface though.

 

The images ARE in the correct directory.

The images were uploaded as binary files

I have tried deleting the .htaccess file in the /includes directory

I have tried renaming the .htaccess file in the /includes directory

I tried uploading all the button images one directory higher into the ..../languages/english/images/ directory

I tried removing the "buttons_" prefix from the button image names in both the .../english/images/ directory and the .../english/images/buttons/ directory

I tried changing the permissions on the includes/languages/english/ directory to 644, 655, 744, 755, 766, 777

The image paths in configure.php are correct

 

If anyone has come up with a solution, it would be greatly appreciated if you would share it.
