Manufacturers - sort by date?

I'm using the manufacturers dropdown for baby sizes (3 months old, 6 months old, 1 Year etc etc)so hte customer can sort by age group. Only problem is because the dropdown is sorted numerically the dropdown sizes are all jumbled up. Does anyone know how to sort the manufacturers dropdown by date added? There is a date_added field in the manufacturers database table but I'm not sure how to left join it to all the other SQL that grabs the manufactuer info in index.php
