davidell Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 I've had good response to the following thread: Shared SSL help, PLEASE SOME ONE HELP! What I would really like to know is who you have used for hosting, as the topic description suggests, specifically sites which have successfully got an SSL certificate up and running with a dedicated IP. Links to your site and your host would be really appreciated.
FIMBLE Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 that is advertising and its frowned upon here! Good idea tho :-) Sometimes you're the dog and sometimes the lamp post My Contributions
davidell Posted May 14, 2008 Author Posted May 14, 2008 that is advertising and its frowned upon here!Good idea tho :-) Hi Fimble, how do you mean 'advertising' as in people posting links? Sorry if I'm in error with my post! I just would like some advice on which hosts to move to as I'm pulling my hair out with the one I'm with at the moment.
FIMBLE Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 its understandable, however most of what you will get would be in the form of advertsiing, "my hosting company can give you all this for xxx" if you see what i mean. I think its a really great idea and very helpful, just dont see it not being abused. regards Sometimes you're the dog and sometimes the lamp post My Contributions
davidell Posted May 14, 2008 Author Posted May 14, 2008 I agree with you entirely, if you scroll to the bottom of the thread I posted you get exactly that. Hence the reason for this thread, but now I see I've just opened myself and the board up to this sort of thing... shame as I would have liked an open discussion on setting up SSL certs and other folks experiences of doing so with various hosts.

All that aside, you can ask your web host to set it up for you.
davidell Posted May 14, 2008 Author Posted May 14, 2008 Thanks for the reply Coopco but therein lies the rub... I initially request the shared SSL be set up, only to find this is set up on a completely different server fastweb.co.uk/mydomain and my understanding is because of sessions etc. this won't work being two seperate domains? If you read my post here there is a better description of my problems.

davidell Posted May 14, 2008 Author Posted May 14, 2008 Sounds right, so you need to get a dedicated IP and a SSL cert to go with it as suggested in the other thread. I'm getting my head around this, I'm just concerned that going the dedicated IP route with Internetters will cost minimum £69 / month and an extra £36 for the SSL cert? Plus, is there any guarantee that using them will work when the shared doesn't, especially when there are hosts out there like 1&1 and godaddy offering the same for around £34 > £41 / month. Anyway, thanks for reading and the feedback. I'll let you know how I get on.
