catalog home page loads very slowly

I'm more than over my head here. A few days back I was getting a "2006 MySQL has gone away" error which turned out to be server related. My server (hostdime) recently upgraded to php5 & mysql5 -i thought that might be the problem - maybe still is. anyway, it's working now, albiet very slowly.

 

I've indexed products_id on my products table and my specials table as well as indexing the expiry field in my specials table.

 

From what I've read, it looks like my queries may be the problem. Honestly, I'm not even sure where to look!
