Images at the top of category listings page

Does anybody know if it is possible to have an image appear at the top of each listings page that is unique to that category?

 

Ideally I want to have the full width of the middle table a bit like a deep letterbox banner. This would possibly replace the category title at the top or could sit just below it.

 

Im not sure how to tackle it.

This is built in. Just give your categories an appropriate image when you create them.

 

Then (slightly) amend "index.php" to show that image rather than an image and a heading.

I installed the Category Descriptions contribution allowed me to place large images at the top of each catagory I think this is the effect you want.
