There is not really and difference in the encryption itself, but there is a difference in the degree of checking done before issuing a certificate.

Low assurance certificates only validate the domain name. (starts from 12 USD and up a year)

High Assurance certificates validate domain name and owner/business and address. (starts from 50 usd and up)

EV SSL certificats have many checks and balances prior to issue, but they are the only ones giving a green bar in IE7 on SSL pages. (starts from 400 USD and up)

Some popular providers are: Comodo, Thawte, Verisign, Geotrust

Which level to choose depends on how much business you do, the average sale/ticket price amount and how important customer trust in your site and business is.

For all intents and purposes, when you pay more than $20 or $30 for a cert, you are either paying extra for the same cert or are paying for advertising. Your average customer won't know the difference between the various certs. All they care about is seeing the ssl lock and https in the url. So don't be fooled by all the hype about which one is better than another. Go with namecheap or godaddy and purchase their 128 bit cert. That is all you will need.

Not entierly correct, for instance the vengine IE browser addon is now getting more and more widely used and it does throw up a warning for low assurance certificates.

The cheap low assurance certificates are widely used by phishing and scam sites, due to the fact that they are issued without any real background checking.

Today's focus on security and anti-phishing makes the choice of atleast a high assurance ssl certificate more and more important.

That said you can start off with a cheap one if you have limited funds and then when business picks up change over to a high assurance certificate.

For most shops, ssl has very little to do with security, it is all about apperance. I haven't seen any shop where the vengine makes a difference, at least not to the average surfer. That might change down the road. In fact, I'm sure it will since the ssl makers realize the large market they will lose if they don't adapt vengine (or sometihng similar) into their low-end ssl's. But, for now, it is simply a waste of money to pay more than $30 for an ssl cert.

The next "thing" is EV SSL with the strong backing by having a standard feature in the new browsers IE7 , Firefox 3 and Opera 2.5 where EV SSL is the only SSL which will show green in the browser bar....

As soon as this has been embeded into consumers minds as the one and only "secure" information modus , as the padlock used to be once upon a time, then even a high assurance certificate will not do....Then the only choice will be an EV SSL certificate.
