alternative pope Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 :-" Ok, I maybe dumb & foolish for getting into all this web-design/ecommerce business with no professional training. But I've been on the PC solid 9/10 hours a day for a week reading up about, & trying to set up (I already have a v basic uploaded site which needs development!) a payment system for my site. If anyone can give me feedback I would be very grateful! Basically, when following the instructions to install osCommerce, I set up my first database using Mysql (is that spelt right?), named it, etc. & then wen't to the osCommerce installation page. In the msg box on the screen it says the following; "The webserver is not able to save the installation parameters to its configuration files. The following files need to have their file permissions set to world-writeable (chmod 777): /home/wsmshopp/public_html/catalog/includes/configure.php /home/wsmshopp/public_html/catalog/admin/includes/configure.php" I then (following other downloaded instructions) tried to set the file permissions, by right-clicking on the database file, selecting properties & looked for Security tab. Now, I recently tried to upgrade from the FAT file system to NTFS, but when trying to convert, it tells me I already have NTFS!? Yet I can't seem to find Security tab in Properties panel of the file. Sorry this took so long, thanx v much 4 reading! :'(

alternative pope Posted May 12, 2008 Author Posted May 12, 2008 HiGoogle it http://www.google.co.uk/search?num=100&...earch&meta= Thanx, that was a good combination of keywords to google. I'm usually crap at searching for info. :-" For anyone reading this also having trouble installing, contact your web-host (if you joined one!) or visit your control panel (if you hav one!). I contacted my host with the problem, & they informed me I could set it up via the control panel (which I didn't think was possible). Anyways, the problem is still a mystery to me, but I followed their advice to install osCommerce in the control panel & so far so good! Currently checking configurations, etc.

I use godaddy so using any of their panels is a pain in the.... so I just decided to use CORE FTP. Great program, to the point, easy to CHMOD files. Dont forget you will have to CHMOD some contributions in the future. Using CORE FTP is great because of speed, you can edit something and upload it, under a minute you can see live results... but Im sure the experts have better ways. Hope this helps.

I seem to be finding something new in my panel all the time! I'm a newbie btw. I keep hearing about contributions, & I know there's a file of that name but could you tell me what is exactly? I'm assuming it's where you store data input, but not completely sure!

If you want your store to do something more than the default oscommerce install, searching the contribution section is much welcomed. http://addons.oscommerce.com/
