AlwaysNewbie Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 It goes like this: I installed osCommerce 2.2RC2 very easy at first time. Then, I added STS 4.58. It was easy too. Then I installed HTC SEO 3.01, and finally I installed Fancier_invoice_6.2_Fixed_2007. I thought to install at least some important to me contributions before I do anything else. There a lot of contributions and all of them look important to me (I think all newbies think that way). I made a backups before and after adding contributions. After I noticed that Fancier_invoice_6.2_Fixed_2007 doesn't print (sends e-mails fine), I decided to recover. Recover was unsuccessful. Tried to recover one step more. Still no go. Finally I finished by re-installation of whole store from scratch. Second time I didn't install second contribution correctly. Well, this time some how I managed get back. My question: how to make good backup and recovery? I tried to copy on a server in diff folder and locally. Some how when I try to make copy on a server I got error messages, not all files or folders been copied. I think is related to permissions. I feel it should be very easy way, cause not all files or folders are important for recovery. Please somebody give some light. How YOU do backup and recovery? Thanks guys. Oh, one thing more: I never saw a contribution for easy backup-management, did you see it anywhere? Computers777dotcom

AlwaysNewbie Posted May 8, 2008 Author Posted May 8, 2008 Create backups of each change on your computer. Jack Jack, probably i didn't explain it well. What I'm trying to say is: I create backups after all changes, but still whenever I try to recover from unsuccessfully added contribution I have a problem. So, I try to understand why and how you guys mostly create a backups: 1. locally or on a server 2. Full backups or only some folders/files 3. Automatic or manually select the files 4. Use any special software (if exist) to make it easier Probably you have something more to say if I forgot other aspects. Thanks for help. Computers777dotcom
Guest Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 The way I do it is that I make a FULL backup of ALL files on the server, I download all the files onto my computer. For the database I use PHPMyAdmin, I don't use the backup manager in osCommerce, I login to PHPMyAdmin and click on the database and then click on Export and then export it, making sure I tick the box for the drop table if it exists.

Thanks for reply IVUM. Do you change permissions for some files on server before you do recovery? Cause it looks like they can't be overwrited. I am asking all that because it looks a bit time consuming (finding all these files and manualy changing permissions). Of course, hopefully recovery will not take place often. Thanks! Guest Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 I don't see the need to change the permissions? I create my websites on my computer, upload it to the server. When I make changes I make the backup onto the computer, this means on my computer I have 2 versions of my website (currently both the same) and then I make the alterations to one of the versions and upload it to the server overwriting the files. If the website is working I then delete the back I made as its not needed. I do this each time I make alterations UNLESS it is a small contribution in which I just backup the altered files which may only be 2 or 3 files.

I think my problem was that after I backup, I made changes directly on a server, which is not so reliable as with a local, or other reasons. I thought about your way also, but didn't try that. Thanks, I will do my changes the same way as you, local first, then update. Computers777dotcom
blr044 Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 I have a question regarding recover of the DB. I had to switch servers. On the old server my osc was 2.2-MS2 and on new server now I am running 2.2-RC2a. As you know any of these basic osc has few example products. On my old site, I had over 1500 products. Before I changed the nameservers DNS I backed up store and database. For the last few says, I am trying move my products to new store. After new store was configured, I backup the DB. With notepad I open both, the old and DB backup files. Then I copied and pasted to new DB. After that, I then restored DB. Ran into a problem. The category list appeared in both catalog and admin. But when I clicked the category name in either of them, no product was found. But checking MyPhpAdmin, descriptions and model numbers and etc where there. This is the list of tables I copied and pasted: products products_attributes products_attributes_download products_description products_notifications products_options products_options_value products_options_value_to_products_options products_to_categories categories categories_description Now for a few, old store had MSRP, GiftCard and HTC Since new store does not have the items in DB, do I need to add them or leave them out. Am I on the right path or did I miss something? Or the reason why in store, no product is found. I hope whomever reads this is not to confusing. If only hand full of products, I would just add them. Bit 1500 products, you can see I need an easier step of uploading products to new store. Tank you. blr044
Guest Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 If you are only bothered about your products you could setup a 2.2-MS2 osCommerce shop either on your computer or in a folder on your computer and then install Easy Populate and export all the products (should include attributes, categories etc) into an Excel file and then remove that website and install Easy Populate into your new website and import, should take no longer then an hour, most likely can be done within 20 minutes depending on experiance.
