Do I really need search engine friendly urls?

I've tried a few add-ons which make urls search engine friendly, but they all seem to stop something else on my site from working.

 

So how important are search engine friendly urls?

Ultimate SEO Urls is the latest one of these add-ons that I'm trying to get to work, but I can't get the checkout to work, it just keeps redirecting me to the login page at the end of the checkout process. I'll keep searching for the answer for a while, but I'm not doing without a functioning checkout for long!
