Help with catagories_id

Recommended Posts

i have searched everywhere and i cant find a topic on this. Okay here is the deal

i have a list of items i need to get on to oscommerce however i have to do alot of editing in order to get it up.

My list of items for example is like this

Product Name | Product catagory | Price | etc

8DG7189 | DG | 32 |

i know how to upload the items in correctly. The only problem i am having is that i have to change the product catagory into a number in order for it to come out. I am trying to get catagory_id into a varchar(64) but however when i change that in phpadmin and rename the number 1 to DG the whole oscommerce goes down. I changed catagory_id under catagories, catagories_descriptions, and products_to_catagories. I am assuming its the way it oscommerce pulls it out? but im not sure how to change oscommerce so that it pulls out a varible instead of a number. Any pointers will help! sorry if this sounds confusing.

Why reinvent the wheel when you can use the contribution Easy Populate to do this.

Spend a few minutes reading the documentation and most things are possible.

well i took a quick look at easy populate but it doesnt seem so easy. I am not 100% sure if this is how it works but im assuming you input all your data into the preset fields on easy populate on excel and then upload it with their script and it will inject all the data all the fields inside mysql. Yes this would be easy but then i would have to copy and search for each field for whatever i have to input and this will take alot longer time. On top of that my catagories are already set as variables no my accounting system. If there was a way to let oscommerce take in variable for catagory_id instead of int(11) then i would have no problems at all everything will go in smoothy.

Category_id is the index field, so you cant change it, but if you have text it`s seems obvious to me you make that the category name, then the dbase work out the id. If you want more description for your category name, there is a category description contribution.

please take a look at this csv. This is what mas90 from my accounting system will spit out from visual intergrator. As you can see column F is where it gets catagorized. There is pretty much two ways for me to figure this out.

1. change all my product line to numbers but i will have to do 3000 different items changes.

or

2. find out a way to make variable on catagory_id( which i dont know how to do)

or

3. Covert the variable to numbers on excel (which is what im doing now but its rather annoying)

i was hoping i can do number 2 but it seems like everyone is telling me there is no way to change catagory_id to variable and have it working.

My approach would be creat categories named as per your list (DG etc), then find out the created id for each new category, replace the relavent category name (DG etc) in your list with the ID, then apply your list.

thats what im doing already now, but it gets rather annoying when u have to do this every day for 30 different catagories. =( trying to figure out a way to either do it in excel with one push of a buttom or do it on oscommerce without editing anything. The last way is start to catagorize them by numbers which is the last thing i want to do.
