weird order number issue

I'm creating a site from scratch and what I normally do is place a test order then go into the database and alter the order_id so that my orders start from a higher number.

 

I've done this on many sites no problem but now when I change the order number, not only do I lose that order in the admin panel any future orders are not recorded. Note that if I change the order number back to what it was, the missing order reappears (though the orders not logged into the database obviously do not) and everything works again.

 

It's been a while since I did a fresh install and I'm thinking that changing the order_id in of a test order in the order table is not enough.

 

Any ideas what is going on? It's as if the admin panel is somehow retaining the old order id and I've no idea why new orders are not logged.

 

I'd appreciate any helps as I hate my order numbers starting from 1
