sturzstrom Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Hello. I just finished my site http://www.hunterfisherdirect.com - and I would appreciate any feedback. One thing I noticed is that the site is extremely slow to load (I have cable modem), and sometimes does not load at all. I am wondering if anyone else has this issue. My store has over 30,000 products. Could that be the issue? Also, I am looking for a nice professional template to substitute for the standard look. If anyone has any suggestions where I can find a good outdoors type template please let me know! Thanks. Sturzstrom
burt Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 You desperately need to optimise your categories box. You can start by removing the category counts - that shoud speed things up substantially.
♥geoffreywalton Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 congratulation, the slowest store I have ever visited. ♥Vger Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 I just gave up on trying to get your website to load up at all. I ran a command line 'tracert' on the connection to your website and the response times were terrible, and timed out at one point (where it went from the above.net telephony provider into the data centre). cmakynen Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Yep, that is one slow loading site! I thought MINE was slow! For sure you have issues with the massive list of categories. In order to generate the categories list, your current setup is probably doing a separate sql query for every category and subcategory below it every time it loads. So if you have 40 categories each with 2 subcategories, the query runs 40 + (40 * 2) times to get the category/subcat name and count the number of items within each. Unfortunately, every time you click on a category to see what's beneath it I think it does the same thing! And worse yet, because those categories are always listed down the left column, every single page you open will redo all those queries again! Something like http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/4589 (CSSMenu) with the most recent modification to cache the database queries would probably help. None of the images show - looks to me like you may have the image path set wrong somewhere because they all have a path something like \images\images\. When I finally got the index.php to load, the search function actually worked pretty quickly, which was good since it brought up 999 products (I searched for Knife). Many of the images didn't display, but those that did were fairly large (in size) - since you ahve so many products, a good image Thumbnailer will be important. To make a quick and simply "outdoorsy" update, you could consider adding a background image to your Main class in your stylesheet.css file, and changing your infobox heading backgrounds to something dirt-colored. Its a good start... but MAN its SLOW and BIG!! Good luck optimizing that - once you do, you sure will have a comprehensive store there!
Guest Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 yup, the site loaded so slow that i gave up amd left before it was finished loading.. i waited almost 2 minutes over a broadband connection and it still was not done... too slow TIM

Guest Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Could the slowness be attributed to their MySQL server?
sturzstrom Posted May 3, 2008 Author Posted May 3, 2008 Thanks fir all your help!!! I turned off the category count and the site immediately sped up. I will continue to work on optimization and consolidate the categories. I also think they're a little overwhelming. Now that the site actually loads, are there any suggestions for templates or altering the look? Thanks. Sturzstrom
