Guest Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 I think I am right in saying, for UK vat, the invoice needs to show the total vat amount including the vat content of the shipping. At present I am only getting the Vat content of the sale (the shipping is shown inc vat, but that vat content is not included in the overall vat sub-total). Have tried searching for an answer, am hoping one of you more clued up peeps is going to point me to a place where this was solved months / years ago. Thank you in advance. Regards Dom

Guest Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Under modules >> Shipping>> have you set the tax for each shipping method? I just have a flat rate. The shipping is showing on the invoice including vat. The vat content of the shipping however is not included in the overall vat subtotal.

markg-uk Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 one quick point if you are sending via royalmail or parcelforce no vat applies You still have to charge VAT on your shipping, even if you use RM or Parcelforce (unless the goods in said package are all zero rated)
Guest Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 and the answer to my question is ........ sorry i'm a newbie. I have set the "flat rate" as taxable goods

markg-uk Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 It seems I get the same - the correct postage charge (including VAT) is shown, the order total inc postage and VAT is correct but the VAT line only shows the VAT portion of the product, not product + postage. I don't think I've done any mods which affect order total. Not 100% how to fix it ...
BRWG Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 You still have to charge VAT on your shipping, even if you use RM or Parcelforce (unless the goods in said package are all zero rated) Thanks, i didnt know that (i had emailed HMRC and phoned them, but cant seem to get a straight answer) It does seem kinda wierd though, If i pay £3 for a parcel to be sent, it doesnt have VAT attached, so i have to charge my customers £0.52 VAT. but as i am in a competitive market, ill probs have to knock that £0.52 out of my profits (could be a big problem, oh well)
jimjamuk Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 hi guys, yes i have the same problem - site not live couple - possibly 2-3 weeks off but this is the only issue I have left. Other posters are right that VAT needs to be charged on the p&p as it is a service. It follows that once the VAT is calculated wrong in this case all the reports show the same values so cannot really use these as they are also technically wrong. The only thing I can think of so far is that I have to manually create a VAT invoice and print separately. Not go a clue on the php side of things but I imagine that the Total Tax field just needs to include the shipping value as if it were a product - any budding programmers out there care to take a look - this must be a problem for ALL UK VAT registered shops?!
markg-uk Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 It sounds simple to achieve but I've been looking at it all morning and I can't work it out yet. I just can't see it. I can't even find where the VAT total for the products is generated in the first place. I'm in the same boat, ready to go live but can't until I get this fixed now. Help! :)
markg-uk Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Ok, I managed to fix my issue, was my own error. So, off the shelf, oscommerce does add the tax correctly - I had made an error when adding a VAT exemption contribution, it was making the shipping exempt.

I haven't added any contributions in that area, and I have the issue. What did you do?
markg-uk Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 I haven't added any contributions in that area, and I have the issue. What did you do? If you didn't have the contrib, it doesn't matter :) Have you made sure that your shipping method has tax enabled? Why don't you do a screenshot like I did so we can see whats going on.

markg-uk Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 On your shipping module, have you entered the prices INC VAT and set the shipping method to no tax?

Flat Rate Enable Flat Shipping True Shipping Cost 5.11 Tax Class Taxable Goods Shipping Zone --none-- Sort Order 0 thats the only shipping rate I have.
markg-uk Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Thats just weird. I installed the flat rate shipping module on my site to test, set it to the same settings as you but it shows the correct VAT. Does it give the same issue on other shipping modules (might give us an idea of where the problem lies either way)?
jimjamuk Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 OK now thats weird also I had the same problem - no extra contribs - just plain build. Now with just table rate it was doing the odd thing above - now with flat rate module added its fine..... going to play around for a bit longer and see what other results i get
