DJYoshaBYD
I am new to this.. I am starting a business, and have decided to use oscommerce for the site.. I have a laptop, and I like to be out in the open when I work, or at work on laptop... I would like to be able to develop my site offline, then upload everything when I am finished.. kinda like frontpage.. is this possible? it would thing very easy on me, considering I dont have the internet everywhere I go.. DJYoshaBYD
OK.. now will that act as a "shell" or something like that, that will emulate the control panel for my webhost? I want to be able to use oscommerce just like I do online, but offline... I was reading about the program.. it seems cool, but will it actually act like, ooo lets say, my control panel site at hostopia? or something similar? will it have options to install plugins and moduals and stuff, then run oscommerce from it? Im sorry for my lack of terminology.. I am a PC and network savage, but I know nothing of webhosting.. its all new to me
BryceJr
Xampp provides the "environment" for oscommerce to be installed and run locally in your computer. Having oscommerce running in your machine locally allows you to test your configurations and alterations without breaking your Live website. It doesn't do emulations of control panel. Guest
Take a look at this! Just introduced to these books myself and they are exceptional. I have so much more understanding of OSCommerce since downloading all these. Great for beginners and anyone who wants to learn more. Check it out! http://www.oscbooks.com/

You change the oscommerce files and database as you want offline (and view them via your xampp installation). When you want to transfer, all you have to do is copy those files and database to the online webserver, change the two configure.php files (that contain details of your files and database username/password) and you're done.
