I have zencart already installed for a shop i am running for the United States but wish to use OSCommerce for my UK shop....I have just installed it using the Fantastico script and have run into a problem - My admin area keeps saying Error: Invalid administrator login attempt.

Now at first i thought maybe it was a corrupt installation so i uninstalled and re-installed...same thing happens.

The admin name and password is correct yet it keeps bringing up this error message.

Can anyone help please.

If anyone has experienced this and has a fix i would appreciate it very much....Thanks...M

Please excuse the typo - Just noticed it Nedw ( shucks i should be ashamed of myself but thats what i get for eating cheese n' onion Ringos whilst typing the message - Those Ringos are delicious and i wish they would sell them at the supermarkets instead of Walkers this and Walkers that )

If it is locked using htaccess reset the username and password using your isps control panel, if it is through the tables in mysql either install a contribution or use one of the many password resetting fixes from this forum.

I am still locked out....Can you provide a link to how i can reset using the htaccess file or provide a link to one of the password resetting fixes.

Why does this happen anyways - Is it a fantastico script issue or a file in OSCommerce ?

Well no one ever answered this post and i couldn't find an answer to it.

You would think installing from a script that the admin area would work with the password and name you supply it before Fantastico installs it.

It's a shame really that people expect us all to be some sort of computer whizz....If anyone could only give me step by step instructions i can do it but when someone says casually to use htaAccess i'm left scratching my head as to how to use it...As in i need more precise instructions.

I would have used OSCommerce but now i'm going back to using Zencart which i already have a handle on....Shame also as i prefer the look of OSCommerce but if i can't even access my admin area and no one seems to be able to give a response other than one person then i don't have a choice.

Call this a gripe but i have noticed on both this and the zencart forum that getting information in newbie terms is extremely hard.....I mean we all have to learn somehow and i enjoy learning but at times it seems no one really cares to give clear advice.

I wish there were more stickies with step by step instructions for when things like this happen.

.htaccess is a hidden file in your directory (directories) and is not an osc file.

You could download osc from this site (see solutions tab at the top of the page), then you could use the two pinned posts at the start of the installation and configuration forum.

I guess that no one answered your last question because they did not see it, but google htaccess and you get results.

I understand all that but i wish to use the fantastico script for installation and something isn't right as the admin area won't accept the correct password or username.

I know what .htaccess is as i use it on my zencart installation to re-direct to http://www instead of http:// - What i don't understand is how i can access my admin area using an .htaccess file.

Maybe there is a bug with the fantastico script and others might be having the same problems but i haven't read of it on these forums and i did try a long search for it....I even found a few posts where others had problems gaining access to the admin area but they didn't seem to have any replies explicitly stating how they may remedy this.

If anyone can give me a step by step on how to use .htaaccess or perhaps link to a post i missed telling me how to use it to gain access to the admin panel then i'll give it a shot because like i said i really would prefer to use OSCommerce instead of zencart as i think the fluid design looks better.

I think what was meant that you check the htaccess file to see if it is blocking you in some way. Exactly how, I don't know.

I don't know if fantastico is using the rc2a version of osc, that is why I suggested downloading osc from here.

Error: Invalid administrator login attempt . It does sound like an invalid username and/or password, but I don't know.

I guess the key question is - the screen where you're not able to log in - is it the osCommerce login screen (shoudl say osCommerce at the top, in a default grey banner; several references to osCommerce in the footer), or not?

THe recommended installation has basically 2 layers of password protection: one on the admin directory (.htaccess stuff), and one just into the application interface. If it is the osCOmmerce login screen itself that's giving you fits, then check this link for how to recover by accessing the osCommerce database table where the admin password is tored (I never tried this - it sounds viable but I don't know for sure - probably worth a try since you're at the end of your rope): http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=291556

But for what its worth - the first time I installed osCommerce was via Fantastico also - and after finding this official site, I realized that my Fantastico had installed an old version, so I blew it away and reinstalled it myself using the installation files for 2.2 rc2a from here. Its easy, if I was you I would do that just to ensure you are getting a good solid version and that there's no miscommunication between the Fantastico and osCommerce.

Sorry nobody caught your message earlier! This is really a good place, people are helpful - just sometimes they sleep! (or maybe they too have their hands in their own cheese 'n onion Ringos!)

And - yes, its hard at first being a newbie here - but it gets easier. Hardest part is that many people (me included) assume people know the same things they know, and that can lead to gaps in explanations. Good luck!

Yes it's the latest version of OSCommerce....It's also the log on screen.....I already learned everything i can about ZenCart so know all about installation etc etc but i'm wishing to learn OSCommerce now but unfortunately i keep getting the following message - Error: Invalid administrator login attempt.

Now i triple checked and re-installed twice and the login username and password i provided is correct...I tried going into the PHP Admin section of my Control Panel and changing the password and username and it still doesn't work.

I can only imagine somewhere there is a problem regarding the fantastico installation as the supplied information for the password and username was correct ( Especially since i did re-install and already know how to configure since i have installed and fully configured a zencart installation )

I don't know how to use the htaccess file to get into my admin section of OSCommerce and i really don't want to upload and try to work out MySQL databases ( I have limited time since i'm currently working on the zencart American shop with adding products etc )

My wish though is long term to perhaps use Easy Populate and switch to OSCommerce for that shop but first i really need to get into my Admin Panel and it just won't allow me.

I really don't think its an .htaccess problem because you are seeing it at the actual osCommerce login screen. If you had an .htaccess type problem, you'd get some kind of access denied / 404 type page, not the exact error you note above.

As you are experience with Zencart, I guess you have the phpAdmin tool via your hosts cPanel? If you can get in there, get to your osCommerce database, then maybe you can try the fix from that link I referenced earlier. Or get ahold of your hosting company and tell them there might be an issue with their Fantastico setup.

That does seem to be the answer.

I use InMotion Hosting and will contact them and see what they say....They will probably say until Fantastico gets updated they can do nothing although i remember contacting them regarding Live Help being an old version and they couldn't do anything yet within three days of telling them of the security risks a new updated Live Help was in the Fantastico scripts ( probably just a coincidence that the change happened so quick )

Thanks for your help everyone and i'll let you know what happens via the forum so other users can maybe get some insight into what the problem is ( assuming my hosting company knows )
