wizardsandwars Posted December 19, 2002 Posted December 19, 2002 I just recently found out that if you use the USPS online shipping lable generater, then Delivery Confirmation is FREE. Wow, for us, this is huge. We've paid extra to have this service since we've been in business. I'm wondering if anyone else is using this? If so, I'm wondering what are you using for a label. Obviously, I'd like to have a self advesive label. However, the java program that the USPS uses to create the shipping lable forces you to use the entire page for each label, the bottom of which you are supposed to cut away and keep as a receipt for your records. I was wondering if there was blank self adhesive lables that were a lebel at the top, with a perferated edge in the middle for easy tear away. Or, is there an easier way? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. Guest Posted December 19, 2002 Posted December 19, 2002 Chris, Check your local office supply. There are self-stick labels in all kinds of configurations.
wizardsandwars Posted December 19, 2002 Author Posted December 19, 2002 I would have thought so to, however, I am having no such luck. I figured that Avery or someone would have a label designed especially for this. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. twinmoons Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 We've been using this for almost a year now. Actually, you can print the label and receipt separately. Take a look at the check boxes. One of them should say "separate receipt". When you slect that and generate a label, it creates a separate label and a separate label. The label only prints on half of the page. You can choose to print or not to print the receipt portion. Hope that helps. BTW, I love this program very much as well :)

You mean something like the free UPS self-adhesive labels (two to a sheet without any logos)? I'm not suggesting you use their labels to ship with USPS, but is that the kind of labels you are looking for? I was able to find them in my local Staples store.
sfatula Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 We've been using it for quite some time, don't know how long. Actually, the same labels you use for UPS work perfectly for USPS. Of course, if you get UPS to send them to you for free, you cannot use them for USPS per your agreement with UPS, but, the point is, the same label is the correct label. I actually originally found out from my local post office. The clerk asked me why I was paying for delivery confirmation! Steve
wizardsandwars Posted December 20, 2002 Author Posted December 20, 2002 Yeah, I guess my thought here is, even though we are getting free confirmation, I'm looking at what i cna print, and wondering why they don't have a way to be able to print 6 or 8 of them per page. It looks like the USPS program only lets you print 1 at a time. So if you have a sheet with 2 labels on it, how do you tell the program which label on the page to print it on? Thanks for the heads up on the receipt checkbox. I completly overlooked that. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. sfatula Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 Chris, I guess for the same reason UPS's free labels they send you for nothing only really print on half of the page, and you essentially waste the other half. For that matter, Fedex does the same thing I suppose they aren't thinking paper or trees. But hey - you can't knock no fee! Steve
wizardsandwars Posted December 20, 2002 Author Posted December 20, 2002 Take a look at the check boxes. One of them should say "separate receipt". I don't see this checkbox anywhere. I've been playing around with this. I went to "Shipping >> Print Shipping Label >> Print Shipping Label Without Postage" Then I entered the addresses, along with weight, shipping date, shipping from zip code. Then I hit continue. The next page offers methods, with optional signature service. There is also an option to print with, or print without postage. The next page displays the label, with a print and a cancel button. Nothing else. Where is the option to not print the receipt? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. digi Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 Canada post is the same thing, It prints out a label on half of the paper, than you fold the paper in half, and you stick it into a special "labelop" (Plastic pouch) - which is free from canada post, this is the way I have it setup, *Outlined in chalk everone looks the same* Currently useing OSC 2.2 MS1 running on Apache/1.3.27 (Unix) (Red-Hat/Linux) mod_jk/1.2.0 mod_perl/1.26 PHP/4.3.3 FrontPage/5.0.2 mod_ssl/2.8.12 OpenSSL/0.9.6b

I am referring to the standalone Shipping Assistant application that USPS sends you. And here is a snapshot of the screen for where the separate receipt checkbox is:
wizardsandwars Posted December 20, 2002 Author Posted December 20, 2002 whoa! No, I was talking about the web interface. Now, THIS looks like EXACTLY what I need. How'd you get it? They havn't sent me anything. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. twinmoons Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 Here's the link on the usps site. I love this application 'cause you can store your addresses in an addressbook and re-use them. http://www.uspswebtools.com/ShippingAssist...t/SA_splash.htm
wizardsandwars Posted December 20, 2002 Author Posted December 20, 2002 Are you using seld adhesive labels? Are they 1 per page or 2 per page? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. twinmoons Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 Are you using seld adhesive labels? Are they 1 per page or 2 per page? Yep. They are 2 per page and I usually don't print the receipt part.
Guest Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 You know guys....you can do all of the things that the Shipping Assistant does and print postage online with Stamps.com. The monthly fee is less than what I would spend on gas going to the PO every day. I have been using it since it came online.
twinmoons Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 When you uses the printed stamps, do you just hand your packages to the postal delivery person (oh so politically correct. LOL)?
wizardsandwars Posted December 20, 2002 Author Posted December 20, 2002 Yep. They are 2 per page and I usually don't print the receipt part. I'm not worried about hte receipt either. How do you tell the printer what position to print the lable in, top or bottom? Kim, You know guys....you can do all of the things that the Shipping Assistant does and print postage online with Stamps.com. The monthly fee is less than what I would spend on gas going to the PO every day. I have been using it since it came online. Its really just the labels I'm concerned aobut. Until now, I have been printing my own labels, and purchasing delivery confirmation seperatly. My packages usually all weigh under 1lb, so I can drop them at any drop box. Now, though, I found out the the USPS is offering FREE delivery confirmation if you print your label online. So I'm trying to learn what the best way of printing a USPS label is. So far this "shipping assistant" is pretty cool. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. wizardsandwars Posted December 20, 2002 Author Posted December 20, 2002 Also, (sorry for so many questions) Will this shipping assistant print the postage, too? If so, how does it charge me? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. twinmoons Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 I'm not worried about hte receipt either. How do you tell the printer what position to print the lable in, top or bottom? It always prints the label on top of the page. What I do is that I stack a bunch of labels and keep printing. Then for the next batch, I flip the last stack around and it's ready for the next round of printing. At the end you are left with the backing sheet. If you are real creative, you can use the non-glossy side of the backing paper to print invoices, a packing list, or whatever else you like.
twinmoons Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 Unfortunately the shipping assistant doesn't print postage. Now I'm really looking into this stamps.com thing. The lines at the post office really are killing me. I waste at least half an hour in there everyday.
Guest Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 When you uses the printed stamps, do you just hand your packages to the postal delivery person (oh so politically correct. LOL)? I work out of my home and our mail box is out front. I satck my packages by the box and my postal person picks them up....I love it! Chris, Stamps. com does the free delivery confirmation, prints the postage, prints the labels, prints envelopes, stores your contacts etc, etc. You don't have to go to the PO ever! Hand your packages to the postal person. I even do international shipments. You buy your postage online and print it out with your computer....Even BETTER than shipping assistant. All you need is a postal scale...and depending on the program you may get that free...You do have to buy your labels but, I still save over having to go to the PO.
wizardsandwars Posted December 20, 2002 Author Posted December 20, 2002 Kim, Interesting. Sounds like I'll have to look into this. Can you use self adhesive lables with more than 1 label on a page? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. Guest Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 The package label with the delivery confirmation prints on the Avery 2 per page sheet. Other types of postage can be printed on other styles of labels.
DavidR Posted December 20, 2002 Posted December 20, 2002 I don't know if this might be easier for you, but the labels that I use for this are available here http://www.onlinelabel.com/ol400.htm. You just turn them around as was mentioned - the program doesn't have to know which label it is, it always prints on the top I think :D. Stamps.com really is worth the little fee they charge, at least I have found it useful since 1999. David
