sorting options for category results, search results, etc.

Ok, maybe I am just overlooking something very simple, but how the heck do I get my products sorted by item number?

 

When I click on a category for example, the listing of products appear to show up according to the order I inputed them, or alphabetically? Im not even sure, but what I want it to do is to sort the listings automatically by model #

 

Is there some way of doing so?

feel free to take a look at what I mean... just click on any of the categories on the left menu and look at the sorting of the listings!
