The e-commerce.

Assuming you mean paypal standard, open a business account, install the paypal module in your shop (update if you have a pre-IPN version) and you are done. I'm not aware of any debate going on as to how to do this but if you want more detail, please ask a more direct question.

If by "more up to date osCommerce" you mean RC2, then there is a paypal IPN version included with it. I haven't heard of any problems with and would suggest trying it first.

In the last two months I have set up another shopping cart for a theatre and used their PayPal account for ticket purchases.

I just set up their PayPal email address in the module and the IPN in their PayPal profile and left them to it. It has and still is working successfully. It just means that you leave their site to pay but return after payment which doesn't appear to suit everybody in this forum but they are very happy with it.

As a result they have now asked me to assist in getting web payments pro from PayPal which will reduce their charges by 1% and also allow them to accept payments by credit and debit card over the telephone. Their belief is that I have to change the coding to do this but in reality I don't. All payments are still to the email address as before as long as there is no problem leaving the website to make the payment.

I don't see the need to have to remain in the site to make the payment "behind the scenes" through PayPal. But it doesn't suit everybody.
