well not posted in a while, must be at least a couple of years... but stumbled back to OSC for my girlfriends shop. In my time away, i've become a little bit wiser in the ways of PHP.

Still in the early stages of the launch, marketing can be such a pain, but anyway here it is. http://www.golcarhouse.com

  • Its nice - flows well, design is really gorgeous (what do you use for that? I'm stock out-of-the-box OSC at the moment, can only dream of making a design like yours!)
  • I like the little Yorkshire dialect in the beginning of the "about us" section. Makes it personal.
  • The name is (to me) very unusual, "Golcar house" - what's it mean? Explain on the "about us, " it helps develop the appeal.
  • I guess my one criticism is that when you get into a product's details, suddenly there are all those "facebook, del.ico.us, digg" etc. links/icons - they are incongruous with the rest of the site and detract from what is otherwise quite classy. I understand why you would want the links there; maybe work a little on the layout of that section to make it complement the overall design.

THanks for sharing - its very nice.

hey,

thanks for the comments.

My girlfriend is a fashion designer by trade so she uses a combination of different programs for her graphic design, the header was initially created in adobe illustrator from there i used fireworks to create the slices for text and add in the mouseover effect buttons. Day to day, i use Zend Studio for development so the html from fireworks was copied into that and any final layout tweaks made there.

I was dubious about even adding the social bookmarking links as they don't fit in with the look, feel and flow of the site but they have proved fairly popular so far. What would you suggest in term of positioning and layout. We are still not entirely 100% on the product page as it ends up getting tweaked in some way just about every other day.

The name is unusual i suppose but there is a story behind it. Originally the domain names golcarhouse.co.uk and golcarhouse.com were bought because we were going to be moving back to Scotland from where we are now in the village of Golcar, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. So I bought the 2 domains with the intention of setting up a website to help sell the house from. But that move never came off and after a few months of the domains just sitting there the idea of selling to the masses came to fruition. From there came an initial static site on .co.uk and now to a shop based on OSC.

So its been an interesting time reaquainting myself with OSC after all these years, but made a tad easier by the fact that i've been a php developer for the last seven years, so modifying it to suit our needs has been a lot easier than what i remember when I last dabbled about 5/6 years ago.

cheers,

Barry.

My gran lived in Colne (near Nelson & Burnley), so now that you mention it I had a look at a map and found Golcar not too far off!

I think the social bookmarks themselves are a good idea - and you both obviously have a great sense of style, so maybe you can "de-tune" those little icons to make flow better. I don't know if its the rainbow of colours that throws me off, or what.

Overall, its a pretty minor criticism of a beautiful site :D
