Products_new - limit number shown

need more help with this page!!

 

How can I limit the number of items 'products_new' shows in total. Eg, to only show the last 50 additions.

 

Currently it shows everything I have in my shop, so currently the navigation bar has 139 pages! Obviously this dates back to the first product I added years ago - hardly a new addition to the shop!

 

Can I just have it show a maximum of say the most recent 50-60 products in total, across a few pages only. I've altered a couple of things in the admin panel that people have suggested in other threads, but this hasn't helped.
