Header Tags SEO

Jack_mcs

Recommended Posts

Hi Jack,

I was trying to install it ;

1/http://www.mysite.com/headertags_seo_install.php = ok

2/ uploaded all the new files : saw box header heading seo appearing in the admin, changing permissions same as imagedirectory.

3/ No warnings in header tags seo, but NO "Replace me in Page Control..."

Probaly becose still have to changed the modified files?

Dont know, dont like to use winmerge and comparing all these files.

Prefer doing it manually

So, like you say in the manual, if you dont see "Replace me in Page Control..." stop & find out why.

I stopped & dont find why

First, while the latest version will work with the BS version, it does not have the latest BS files due to how often they change. So installing by uploading the included file is probably not a good idea. There are also not instructions for that version so the only good way is to compare files. I will be releasing a new version with instructions but I don't have a firm date on that.

I don't understand what you mean when you say, "description on what i must have" but if you mean you need direction on how to use it, does clicking on one of the help buttons not answer your questions? If not, please be more specific as to what it is you need and I will try to answer.

Hola Jack,

4 me it seems to work & till now no problems with it.

You wrote some days ago that I was missing some database entries, probaly becose you did'n see all the features of your addon, becose not all are active in BS. That's why I installed it again to be sure it was good.

I prefer a manual with clear explanation find x, paste under, find y replace by then the file comparision.

Especialy if you not have a clue about what's is important for the new addon.

When the important or needed code are market with BOF HTS & EOF SEO or something then I dont find it a problem to use file compare, but not all are written that way. Anyway thanks 4 your patience & support

If I recall correctly, I was referring to an image you posted that showed a problem. If everything Is working for you then it isn't anything to be concerned about.

My code changes all have a comment before and after. But writing those instructions, especially for large addons like this one, is time-consuming so they didn't make the last version. They will be in the next one so can double check your installation at that time, if you want.

Hi Jack,

4 me it works like a charm, thanks 4 ur great addon.

Everything works except that I have a problem with the header.

I'm not 100% sure & i dont want you feel bad or accused but after installing & playing wit HTS, Google Feeder & GoogleXML if it was working i start to install the header & I'm able to upload a image (is also on the server) but doesn appear on the frontend. Still keeping the osc one.

Change my logoname to store_logo & appears. Strange. Second all the adjusment i make does not do what it must do.

I have the settings from the other shop (same logo) but no change.

Somewhere in the database is the problem I guess.

I did'n made modificaciones in any file, css or so for the layout, so that could not be the problem.

see screenshot you understand what i mean.

sorry for my bad english & keeping you bussy

it has nothing to do with the sales hotline, becose in other (i destroyed) it was working well.

hope you know the solution i thank you for your support

cheers

In earlier versions of the BS shop, the logo name was changed to store_logo. In current version, the name is loaded from the database. So if you replaced your files with the included that will have broken the header.

For the social icons, thanks for mentioning them.

Dear Jack,

first, thanks for your great addons to give shops more value, but the manual of Header Tags SEO is slopwork.

I am realy sorry that I have to tell that.

Here why :

Install_Catalog.txt

NEW FILES TO ADD:

Upload all of the files in the included catalog directory. You need to be sure
that the files are uploaded to the same directories on your server. If your shop
uses a language other than English, you will need to be sure to copy the files
from the english directories into those directories and edit them accordingly.

NOTE: If you have a clean shop, you can just copy all of the files in the
directory named

  catalog

Seems logic, if theyre NEW files you will not have them in a clean and neither in a modified shop
So you need them ALL in BOTH shops.
In my opinion there NO NEED of a NOTE, that's CONFUSING.

Header Tags SEO admin install instructions

4) If you have not installed other contributions into your shop, then
    upload all of the files in the catalog_only_new_files directory to the
    same location in your shop and that will complete the installation.
    With these words I understand that I dont have to take note of the code here unther!!!
     I'm NOT a native English speaker, but that's clear.

   If you have installed other contributions, then you should only upload the
    files in the catalog directory and then make the following edits.
   With these words AGAIN I understand that I dont have to take note of the code here unther!!!

Please note the following line numbers are for a clean install. They will
vary if your files have been changed.

WHAT??? First you wrote that for a CLEAN install you need to upload all the files to complete the installation.
Second parts seems to be for modified shops and now you write that the following line numbers are for a clean install!!
Do you know what you want Jack?

Also, these changes are separated by =====, which indicates a new file, and
by -----, which is a change in the same file. This is an attempt to make the
instructions a little easier to follow.

Now my analysis of your manual.
Read carefully :
===================================================================
In admin/includes/function/general.php before the last ?>,

Why editing this file, while it is IN the package?
Much easier when it was edited in the package!

In admin/includes/function/general.php of the BS EDGE edition there is NO ?>
Not 1 ?> in the total file
And its NOT the ONLY php file in BS EDGE WITHOUT a ?> at the END while many BS Addons write that.

===================================================================
In admin/includes/database_tables.php before the last ?>,

Why editing this file, wile it is already EDITED in the package!
Yes Sir, the code is already there.

===================================================================
In admin/includes/filenames.php anywhere before the last ?>,

Why editing this file, while it is IN the package?
Much easier when it was edited in the package!

===================================================================
In admin/includes/languages/english.php before the last ?>.

Why editing this file, while it is IN the package?
Much easier when it was edited in the package!

In admin/includes/languages/english.php of the BS EDGE edition there is NO ?>

This was also the reason that I got non finished (you called it missing entries)
I found it today by searching how many links theyre where of xxxx.php in both shops and saw the differences.
Wondering that I was, so stupid or not concentrated (select what you whish) I start studying the manuals and found the reason.

===================================================================
In admin/includes/languages/english/categories.php anywhere before the closing ?>.

Why editing this file, while it is in the package?
Much easier when was edited in the package!

In admin/includes/languages/english/categories.php of the BS EDGE edition there is NO ?>
Not 1 ?> in the total file

===================================================================
In admin/categories.php,

Why editing this file?
Its already EDITED in the package

===================================================================
In admin/includes/template_top.php,

same as admin/categories.php

===================================================================
Make the following changes to admin/manufacturers.php

same as admin/categories.php

===================================================================
That's all ;-)

===================================================================

Don't understand me wrong Jack but these kinds of manual are very confusing.
I understand that writing a manual takes time and its for free so whatever.
But in my opinion it would be better for everybody (for you at most) that you take time to write the manual in clear phrases that could not be an issue of wrong interpretation.
It's easier to install, less confusing, less mistakes, less cry for help and support, less time to loose to offer solution.

because today I installed (AGAIN) a clean shop and copied all your files to the shop and I got errors and not working links.
That's the reason that I decide to studying your manual and when I want to copy the codes to the files I realized that the files where in the pack, why editing them AGAIN?
And why I should editing files that are already edited?

Best is 1 file for Clean install and another for Modified shops.
Yes some more work, but MIXING both in 1 file is mostly asking for problems.
NO TIME? Ask me.
I will write them for you.
And I will install it every time to see if its according the manual.

See screenshot of the result when you follow the manual after 4)

saludos

Dear Jack,

I edited the files in catalog before the upload.

I did'n used the cm_header_logo & logo.php of the catalog, these files are different from original & reason that the header dont match my whishes.

Installed the database, upload the whole bunch, installing & everything is working as a charm.

Even the header is doing what I whish.

ENDLY

If you whish I send you my remake of the manual and install files

I've mentioned at least three times to you that instructions for installing into a BS shop do not exist. You chose to ignore me and use the instructions anyway. Sorry you had a bad experience with it but that's your own doing.

No problem Jack,

its from bad experiences that you learn something good.

Yes you told to compare files which I did, but when files missing info/code then you have a problem.

And even 4 other installations, the manual is confusing & not all the files are correct

Anyway, it endly works without causing problems.

Thank you very much for this great addon

saludos

@@Dj-Viper It sort of depends on your shop. That extra slash is for "closing" the tag. Older versions of oscommerce used a doctype of html and it does not require closing tags. Then there was a version or two that used xhtml and closing is required for it. In the latest versions, html5 is used and closing is optional.

Having some tags that are not closed in xhtml can cause the page not to load, though I think meta tags were never strongly enforced. You can check your site with W3C but don't worry too much about fixing problems you find. Most, if not all, oscommerce shops will fail verification. Unless the failures are fatal, fixing them is mostly busy-work.

Hi,

It's more that with the / in it the meta tags are not shown in a search of metatags test.

See under. using bs 2.3.4

<meta name="Description" content="Foto Meinema is uw online specialist in alles voor de fotostudio en outdoor" />   <meta name="Keywords" content="Foto Meinema, Outdoor, Fotografie, Studio, Optiek, Verrekijker, Accesoires, Falcon Eyes, Telescoop, Spotting Scope, Cameral Lensen" />   <meta name="robots" content="noodp" />   <meta name="slurp" content="noydir" />   <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.fotomeinema.nl/shop/catalog/" >   <meta name="twitter:card" content="summary">   <meta name="twitter:site" content="@@foto Meinema Webshop">

<meta name="twitter:creator" content="@@fotomeinema">

Also under pagecontrol, if i select view results the results give me empty fields.

@@Dj-Viper When you say, "search of metatags test," how are you doing a search? Do you mean in the source of the page? Also, I don't understand  what you mean by :See under. using bs 2.3.4."

The slashes are added near the end of the includes/header_tags.php file if you would like to try removing them to see if that fixes whatever problems you are seeing.

For View Results not working, the only time I've been able to reproduce that was on a site that, on the shop side, was using www in the domain name while on admin side it was not. Is that the case for your setup?

@@Dj-Viper The code for View Result uses the HTTP_SERVER and DIR_WS_CATALOG definitions in the admins configure file. It also changes https to http. So let's say your home page is at http://www.mysite.com, the settings in your configure file should be something like:

define('HTTP_SERVER', 'http://www.mysite.com'); or https
define('DIR_WS_CATALOG', '/');

If not, then the code will fail.

<meta name="Description" content="Foto Meinema is uw online specialist in alles voor de fotostudio en outdoor" />

is being missed by your search tool, but

<meta name="Description" content="Foto Meinema is uw online specialist in alles voor de fotostudio en outdoor">

is found OK, that sounds like a serious flaw in the search tool. To rule that out, run your page through an HTML validator (such as http://validator.w3.org/) and make sure there isn't some problem in an earlier HTML tag, that needs to be cleaned up first. It's also possible that the search tool is simply old and doesn't recognize and pick up recently added meta tags such as twitter:* or slurp, or is even fatally confused by some of the twitter format (@ sign, etc.). Maybe try removing the twitter tags and see if that cures the problem?

A new version has been uploaded. It has the following changes:

  • Added opensearch.php to the exclude files list.
  • Added a delete all keywords button to the keywords section in admin.
  • Added an option to use the model number in the breadcrumb without having to fill in the breadcrumb field.
  • Added the missing class: hts_listing_see_more.
  • Added a delete option for invalid pages. This can break the shop if the wrong file is deleted so use with care.
  • Added a Page Top module - BS only.
  • Added code to remove quotes from title, alt title and meta description tags. Quick fix from a previous version removed.
  • Added instructions for a manual install of the Bootstrap version.
  • Added a stats section to the header of Page Control to provide a quick view of possible problems.
  • Changed the code in the Navigation module to display the Page Top text.
  • Changed the social bookmark code to use a local file for plusone instead of downloading it from google.
  • Changed format of og:locale meta tag - found by Roaddoctor.
  • Changed code in admin/includes/functions/header_tags.php for error on some servers - found by nandima.
  • Changed pseudo code to use an external file instead of being added into the includes/header_tags.php file.
  • Changed the hardcoded references of NONSSL to use $request_type to work with shops using full ssl.
  • Fixed coding mistake in includes/headertags_seo_tagcloud_footer.php - found by Roaddoctor.
  • Fixed a logic mistake that was causing a harmless error to be displayed - found by Roaddoctor.
  • Fixed a missing div in the logo file for BS versions - found by blaine 109.
  • Removed an extra apostrophe in admin/headertags_seo.php - found by Demitry
  • Removed unnecessary code in the specials section of includes/header_tags.php - found by dinopacha.

Hi Jack,

wanted to ask.

The recent Edge BS Oscommerce has got the other SEO reloaded now build in as core. Would installing your addon to that version be ok? I was wondering if you've checked it out.

I just installed it on my test server and looking through the files to see if its compatible.
