Too many categories lowering my PageRank?

Hi,

I have a site selling dog breed related items and I hold each breed as a category and subsequently use the category info box to display these. I have had good feedback from users that the site is easy to use and I am reluctant to change the site. The problem is that we cover almost 80 breeds and, taking the other links on the landing page, my site has well over 100 links, possibly nearly 150. My Google pagerank used to be around 3 but recently has dropped to 1 (and may relate to my increasing my categories). I am not sure if this is the result of my growing number of links or something else.

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar and if anyone has any suggestions. I am gathering links and implenting SEO changes, but it is my pagerank that concerns me as my coverage from Google is not as great as I would wish.

Thanks

PR is virtually worthless so don't get hung up on it, I do believe (personally) that it suggests some measure of the authority with which google views your site as a whole for your core search term (what you say your site is about) but other than that doesn't affect rankings in any major way.

I would ask ..

How deep are your categories?

Do your categories have unique meta tags and content?

Is it necessary to have categories? could the link not go directly to products (maybe not from what you stated)?

Do your individual product pages have unique meta tags? H1 tags? good keyword balance in order for Google to believe that the title is valid?

I could go on but that's a start.
