Guest Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 Your question is not clear, what part of SEO are you looking for? Header tags, url rewrite, etc.
shooter-boy Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 I often use Chemo's SEO Urls - www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,2823 and header tags - http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,207 Rob Rob Bell - Inspired Graphix Customising osCommerce in Australia, and the world! View my profile for web and email links. I'm sorry, but i cannot offer Free support via PM etc, and osCommerce forums prohibit me from putting any reference to paid support in my signauture. However viewing my profile may provide links to my website or something like that which you may find useful.
tapuahk Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 I like Header Tag Controller the best: http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/207
Guest Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Good evening. I downloaded HTC and printed out the "read me" files for installation, so I have it handy. It took 37 pages to print! Im a little "scared". Is it going to be horrible to install and configure? From what Im reading, I think this will be the best thing for me, but oh my gosh, is it that hard? How bad can I screw this up? Michelle
Guest Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 There is a new version called Header Tags SEO. I looked at it and the install was not that difficult. Just make sure you use the correct files and read the instructions step by step till you are sure that you understand them, then proceed and don't leave any steps out. It shouldn't be 37 pages unless it is really big type. It will take about 2 hours to install. The best way is to install XAMPP or EasyPHP on your desktop (both are easy installs) and have a copy of your store on your computer (http://localhost). You will need to redo the configure.php files for it to work but that is easy as you just reinstall osC on your desktop and save the files. Keep 2 copies of your configure.php files (one for your desktop called configure-local.php and one for your real site configure-web.php). Then you just copy and paste if you happen to mess them up. By doing this you can then create a NEW folder on your desktop and keep a backup copy of your working store there. Then WHEN you make a mistake you just copy and paste into the XAMPP or EasyPHP folder for your site and start over. You are back up and running in about 30 seconds then and making mistakes is not as bad as having to start over. Header Tags are important for your store and need to be installed at some point in time so better sooner than later.
Guest Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 Thanks for replying. I have finally gotten the store to where Im not messing it up and boy, Im skeerd! A lot of the 37 pages, after I looked closer, is for different instructions. Thank God! However, Im still unsure about doing it myself. The Header Tags are what Im needing. I cant be found on the search engines. I went through all of the google stuff and I have no errors, everything is good, but Im just not showing up if people want, say, perhaps...digital scrapbooking kits... or, Scrapbooking horses, flowers, etc...my site should come up somewhere. But it's just not. My site is pretty straightforward in what I offer, however, it's just not getting in there. I am such a newbie at this and after losing my site and starting over like 1234567 times from scratch, I did dl OSCommerce and am leaving the files on my desktop in case I screw up again; and yep, its come in handy a couple of times. I have pm someone that I trust about installing Header Tags Controller for me, who knows if he will be interested or not. We shall see. If not, I might just go ahead and dive into it myself and take the risk. Thanks again for your help...will dl those things you suggested. Michelle www.clearcreekscraps.com

Michelle www.clearcreekscraps.com My site is hosted through Hostmonster. I have MySQL, PHPmyadmin, and PHPpgadmin in my control panel, however, I will admit that I have no clue as to how to use them to my advantage. Can I work through those for your suggestions above?
Guest Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 I cant be found on the search engines. I went through all of the google stuff and I have no errors, everything is good, but Im just not showing up if people want, say, perhaps...digital scrapbooking kits... or, Scrapbooking horses, flowers, etc...my site should come up somewhere. But it's just not. If you Google "scrapbooking" you come up with 36,300,000 which is not that many. If you Google "digital scrapbooking kits" you come up with 276,000 results. I think your question should be "how do I get to the TOP of that list"? First thing to decide is if that is what you want to rank well for. If no one searches for "digital scrapbooking kits" and you are #1 for those keywords it won't help you. Your sites header tags have to be designed around keywords that are good for your site and also keywords that people search for. I know nothing about scrapbooking so I have no idea if people search for it. Best thing to do is think about your site as a customer and think of keywords that you would type into Google to find your particular products. Then build your page around that keyword. So if you have a scrapbooking product for horses you might have your page URL as www.mydomain.com/scrap-booking-horses.html and your page title would be "scrap booking horses" and your page description would be about your product using those keywords from your title in the description. Those keywords would also be in your product description. It all has to match so that when Google looks at your page they know that if a person wants "scrap booking horses" Google says THIS PAGE IS THE MOST RELEVENT" and ranks you near or at the top. That is one of several things you need to do to get ranked near the top for the keywords you want. Keep in mind that out of the 36.3 million results Google only displays the top 1,000 and if you are not in the top 20 then you will not get the traffic you need/want so setting up header tags is a first step but must be done correctly or you will not get the position you want for the keywords you need to make your site a success.
